Naspers released its results for the year ended 31 March 2014, which showed that there are now more than 5 million DStv subscribers in South Africa.

“Our pay-television business reported growth in revenues. Subscriber numbers are up by 1.3 million households, taking the base to over 8 million homes across 50 countries in sub-Saharan Africa,” the company said.

“Revenues grew by 20% to R36.3 billion. Investments in DTT services resulted in trading profits creeping up at a slower 13% to R8.5 billion.”

The company added that it continues to invest in their online offering, and are expanding their services on mobile phones, tablets and computers, and launched an improved personal video recorder.

MultiChoice’s DStv BoxOffice service, the company said, is averaging 529,000 movie rentals per month.

At R25 per rental, the group’s BoxOffice service amounted to R13.2 million per month in revenue, and is up from 400,000 movie rentals per month it recorded in 2013.

Naspers said that its PVR base increased 15% year on year, from 956,000 to 1.1 million after the group launched its new Explora PVR with expanded hard drive in 2013.
