DStv rakes it in for Multichoice

Very good results. Except for the worrying decrease in margins

It's weird how margins are falling. You'd think with Pay TV the economies of scale means that margins increase for every subscriber you add.

Happy for all the new subscribers.
I cancelled at the beginning of the month and don't miss the repeats, reality and the rest of the rubbish
Springboks - good excuse to go to the local

I wonder how those number will fall after the world cup?
I change my package to premium for a month when the tour de france is on, the rest of the time its on the most basic one.

How do you downgrade the package you are on? Do you need to phone the call centre, or can you do it on the self service page?

How many of those 5mill r premium subscribers I do wonder :erm:,

Exactly.

Right now the bulk of their subscribers are on the Compact and Extra packages.

A lot of their tech savvy Premium subscribers have downgraded to Compact/Extra or have cancelled in favour of broadband alternatives.

A lot of their Premium subscribers have either downgraded to Compact/Extra or have cancelled entirely in favour of broadband alternatives.

Costs increased more than their annual increase. Salaries, Electricity increased higher than their increase means decrease in margins. Also some content providers are paid per subscriber, so their is no economy of scale, i.e. more subs doesn't mean cost stay the same.

It's always made me wonder when there subscriber numbers keep going up but yet most of the people I know have cancelled the service or are just about to

It could be that people are moving away from premium and they are going for lessor packages.

When I cancelled my dstv I went to the web site and just turned it off I did not call them and get them to remove me from there system I wonder if I am still get counted as a subscriber even though I am not paying them anything. This could explain there loss in margin even though they supposedly grew by a million subscribers. This will also explain there unbelievable growth not really believing these numbers at this point

The new self service website is great - if you can figure out where to go. You can literally click your subscriptions on/off, upgrade/downgrade and add PVR/HD and Indian bouqets. It takes seconds to action the request. No need to call them anymore.

That said, I still think we are ripped off and I hate the fact that there is no other way to get these channels in South Africa legally. Their 8.5 Billion profit shows they are making a killing on content and there excuses of "you can't pick channels" is bogus. At least give us the option of "No Sport but Everything Else" - Call it DSTV Couch Potato.

I must admit I am part of their new stats. Before the start of the Soccer Word Cup, I got myself the Explora decoder with the premium bouquet. It is really an awesome experience to watch the football and now Wimbledon in HD. The catch-up feature is also quite cool because if you miss a match it is easy to view the highlights without having to record the match yourself. I guess I will downgrade to Compact once the Word Cup is over. For now I am very pleased.

It might be overpriced, but consider they're running at a 23% profit. What would you call an acceptable profit margin? 10%? That means they're overpriced by around 13% - I wouldn't call that a "ripoff", it's just "a little overpriced".

I don't think people realise the real problem are the content makers charging so much for the broadcast rights. DSTV are just the messenger of high prices, and everyone just blames them.
