DStv Mobile Drifta to support BlackBerry
DStv Mobile revealed on its Twitter account and in its forum late in 2010 that it is busy developing a BlackBerry application for their Drifta mobile TV receiver and that it should be available before April 2011.
The April 2011 date was significant to DStv Mobile as it was due to launch its commercial offering based on the DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld) standard in the first week of April 2011 after a lengthy trial period.
MultiChoice’s mobile broadcasting service offered twelve channels upon its commercial launch and according to its website, has since added the Big Brother Amplified channel.
To receive the DVB-H signal, DStv Mobile users must either have a DStv Drifta decoder and a supported viewing device (PC, iPhone, iPad), or a device with a built-in DVB-H receiver (e.g. Nokia 5330, Nokia N96, ZTE F900).
A subscription to the service is included with DStv Premium, but costs R36 per month for everyone else. Owners of the Nokia or ZTE DVB-H handsets have the option to pay a weekly fee of R9 instead of a monthly fee.
BlackBerry owners who were hoping to make use of the DStv Mobile bouquet on their devices may yet have to wait a while.
A post in the DStv forums on 14 April 2011 by a MultiChoice employee stated that there have been delays with launching the Blackberry app due to testing.
“We really want to launch it as soon as possible and will let everyone know when we have a confirmed date. Please bear with us,” the post said.
MultiChoice was contacted for comment but did not respond by the time of publication.
