DStv Drifta Android, BlackBerry apps: the wait continues
DStv Mobile customers that banked on the DStv Drifta mobile decoder supporting smartphone platforms other than Apple’s iOS are still waiting for the applications to be released.
When MultiChoice launched the new service based on the DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld) standard, their mobile decoder (Drifta) supported Mac and Windows PC as well as iOS devices such as the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
They also promised support for Android, BlackBerry and Symbian^3 by April 2011.
Symbian^3 support was delivered in a manner of speaking, but not through an application for the Drifta device. Nokia N8, C7 and E7 smartphones running the Symbian^3 mobile operating system have a mobile TV headset which lets the phones receive DVB-H signals.

The Drifta applications for the Android and BlackBerry mobile operating systems have yet to be released; the promised release of April 2011 has long passed.
DStv Mobile said that the launch of the applications were delayed as they felt they needed to do more testing to ensure they launch a quality product.
“Launching the Android and BlackBerry apps are a priority to us and we plan to launch them as soon as possible,” a spokesperson for DStv Mobile said.
When asked to give an indication of the progress made on the development of the applications, DStv Mobile’s spokesperson said they wished they were in a position to give a [launch] date, but were unable to do so.
DStv Mobile said that they understand it must be very frustrating for their customers and that they appreciate their eagerness.
“Please bear with us as finalizing the Android and BlackBerry applications is a priority for all teams at DStv Mobile,” they said.
