DStv IP HD PVR here soon
A new IP HD PVR will be launched in March, offering IP based DStv services to Smart Village subscribers.
The new system uses DVB over IP technology, where the DStv channels are delivered over a closed multicast Internet Protocol (IP) network. The channels are then distributed to individual DStv IP decoders.
Smart Village CEO Chris van der Walt told MyBroadband that they have been testing the device for over two years, and that they are confident that it is ready for a commercial launch.
Smart Village commercial director Craig Househam said that a connection of at least 100Mbps is needed to support the DStv IP service. This means that fibre to the home (FTTH) is basically the only access technology which will support the new service.
Smart Village operates fibre networks in various estates – including Midstream Estates, Waterfall Estates and Zanadu – where the DVB over IP DStv service will be offered.
Smart Village subscribers will be able to subscribe to any DStv bouquet through MultiChoice, and then receive the service through a DVB over IP network rather than a satellite connection.
Househam said that the new IP HD PVR will cost the same as MultiChoice’s standard HD PVR – hence around R1,500.
