DStv IP HD PVR arrives soon

So apart from not getting garbled signal during a rain storm - what are the advantages of this? Will they be offering more interactive content, or what's the deal?

I think it is basically the same as the standard DStv HD PVR, just a different content delivery system (hence DVB over IP rather than satellite broadcast).
 
Smart Village commercial director Craig Househam said that a connection of at least 100Mbps is needed to support the DStv IP service. This means that fibre to the home (FTTH) is basically the only access technology which will support the new service.

It manages to charge small electrical devices over USB quite well though. Maybe their future plan was to let folks charge their remotes via USB or something :D
 
Only smartvillages. Requires 100meg fibre.

What's the point of even comparing the price to current PVR if it's such a niche product?
 
100meg fibre....ok cool...no problem...what is the monthly subs????
can i use this fibre to download my porn.....uhm linux distros???
 
Isn't it technically the same product just with a few wires connecting the ethernet port to the main board :p
 
Looks like a major fail coming up, hands up everyone that has FTTH and hands up everyone that will have FTTH before the end of the year.

Why not just develop the current units more, like make use of the USB port and the Ethernet port. Would love a App to control my DSTV from my phone.
 
So there's only really 2 advantages(I can think of)... no satelite dishes littering the skyline of these plush estates and no loss of reception during bad weather... but what about cable theft? These thieves don't know the difference between copper and fibre cable! Even if they not after fibre, they damage it while extracting copper cable from the ground!
 
I had a chat with Quantum Theory once (on this forum - too lazy to search) and with a firmware modification our current decoders can do all this! The decoder you see in the pic is the exact one that we currently have, have a look at it
 
Who can afford 100mbps FTTH and want's to have such a sh*t looking device in their lounge/room etc?

Would a 100mb connection support all channels at once including the audio/radio stuff? Remember within an estate people will be watch multiple different channels at the same time, including HD content, hence the need for some serious connectivity, in each home and backhaul to content delivery network.
