DSTV SD PVR blackmail

I got the same mail and will basically just use my decoder until it doesn't work anymore.

I tried running netflix but found that you had to choose something to watch with DSTV you can just flick between channels and find something.

Yow.

Best reason not to use netflix I've ever seen...

NOT.

Lazy much?

Actually, I've found the same issue.

I have DSTV and a Roku though. If I still have to decide what would tickle my fancy, I just change to DSTV and channel surf until I find something worth my while.

Also received this email for my 4 tuner HDPVR.

I've still got one of those but not received this mail. Though it's been having issues for the last couple of days I caved and bought an Explora from Kalahari just waiting on it to be delivered. There goes me using the HD PVR in the room :-(
Agree with Ying Yang as well, prefer flicking through the channels and finding something to pique my interest, also having a lot of stuff in HD at my fingertips is a lot more convenient than waiting for it to buffer.

:erm: Yes, we will use this 10 year old electronic product for the rest of our time on this planet. F you progress!!

The move to high band is necessary. They need the capacity. It means almost every installation out there needs an upgrade. At least they are giving you a 2 year heads-up...
its taken them this long to even get all the channels to HD.. erm, yeh okay.

for the amount of money DSTV charges, you will try and find something thats worth your while? I just had to cancel DSTV, because trying to find something worthwhile to watch, is not exactly worth paying so much for. In fact, im watching less tv these days anyway.

Erm, yeh okay what?

They are moving from SD to HD right?, not just a select few channels in HD. Im right in saying, that HD has not been around for a few years. If they are forcing you now to purchase a product for a change over due to them waking up, then that is a problem imo. I get the whole moving with the times bit, but what happens when your SD PVR is still in great working condition, and no need to change it or lay out x amount of cash because in a few years it might not be a viable option? Surely there should be 2 options available, those who want to go HD and those who are happy viewing SD content.

Okay. No... Don't have time to reply in detail now.

so dstv is actively f@king up my SD PVR :wtf: -

isn't there something in the CPA that we can throw at them?
I was thinking of either that or the vroadcast complaints commission, but not sure who exactly

pretty much what i was saying, but some people are trying to become technical it seems.

It is a technical problem and I'm a technical guy in this industry... So yes, I will be technical. DStv needs more bandwidth, to expand their services. They have 2 options.

1st option is to change everything to DVB-S2 (30% more bandwidth) and remove all SD similcasts (some more bandwidth). This is what you suggested is happening. All SD decoders become obsolete, including the SD PVR, but a move to high band is not necessary right now. This route would have made my life so much easier. This is however not what is happening.

Option 2 is to move onto the high band polarities. Currently only 2 polarities are being used by DStv (vertical low and horizontal low). Your SD PVR has 2 inputs and can supply both these polarities to all 3 it's tuners, as required. These 2 polarities are completely filled up. This means DStv has to move to the vertical and horizontal high polarities, for additional bandwidth. Your SD PVR can only supply 2 polarities to its 3 tuners, so if each tuner now needs a different polarity (there are 4), it just can't do it.

So, bottom line, both options mean your SD PVR is screwed. I do think they have to give users the option to XtraView 3 channels, so nothing is taken away from subscribers... I don't think they have to hold everyone else back, to try and keep a 10 year old electronic device operational.

Fair enough Quantum, but at least swap out for existing SD users with an HD decoder instead of getting them to purchase again when there is nothing wrong with their existing one. New customers would just buy the HD one. It's a bit unfair say for somebody who has only just recently spent on an SD PVR, to now spend again on an HD one. My opinion of course

I have no problem with replacing the unit but the lack of extra tuners, as that was the main reason for going the SD PVR route back then.

Exactly this, I'm pretty sure most of us only keep the things for that 3rd viewing environment
