Misleading DStv Mobile ad called out

DStv Mobile

The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) has called out MultiChoice for a misleading advertisement brought to its attention through a consumer complaint.

In short, the problem highlighted by the viewer was that the commercial stated that “all active DStv subscribers get DStv Mobile for free”.

However, as per the DStv Mobile website, only DStv Premium subscribers get a free access to a mobile bouquet in South Africa.

According to the ASA report on the matter, MultiChoice responded by saying that the advertisement was not meant for the South African market and should only have been aired in other parts of Africa.

MultiChoice said that it stopped flighting the commercial in South Africa after realising the mistake.

The ASA called out MultiChoice on this by noting that the ad carried a disclaimer which read: “Available in Nigeria, Ghana, Namibia, Kenya and SA only”.

“This would appear to negate the argument that the commercial was not intended for the local market,” the ASA said.

Regardless, as MultiChoice have undertaken to withdraw the commercial from South Africa the ASA explained that there is no need for it to consider the merits of the matter at this time.
