New DStv “Explora” decoder launching soon

DSTV

A new Internet-connected DStv decoder called the “Explora” is expected to become available in August 2013, an industry source with knowledge of the launch has told MyBroadband.

MultiChoice recently sent out a “save the date” notification to media and other guests for a product launch happening on 31 July 2013, and this event may well be for the new “Explora” decoder.

The broadcaster’s plans for a new decoder emerged towards the end of last year (2012) when head of content at MultiChoice, Aletta Alberts, told media that they expect to launch an Internet-connected decoder during Q1 2013.

Alberts said at the time that this new decoder will increase capacity for DStv’s “Catch Up” content from 20 hours to 175 hours.

Additionally, “if you have a fantastic Internet connection then you could have access to other content,” Alberts said.

Industry sources have revealed that the Internet capabilities of the new decoder will not be available at launch, but that a 2 Terabyte hard drive will increase capacity for BoxOffice and Catch Up content.

Responding to our queries about the new DStv Explora decoder, MultiChoice said that they can’t comment at this stage.

Asked whether their promotional HD PVR and Walka combo deal is intended to clear stock ahead of the launch of a new decoder, MultiChoice said that the special is part of their normal winter promotion.
