Record subscriber increase for Cell C

Cell C has 16.6-million subscribers on its network, with 1.6-million gross additions (1-million net additions) in March 2014.

According to Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos, March 2014 was a record month for the network.

Speaking to journalists during an event at Cell C’s headquarters in Midrand, Dos Santos said that the growth was predominantly driven by the pre-paid market, with Cell C seeing a year-on-year increase in daily recharges of 37%.

Pre-paid subscriber spend had increased 31% year-on-year at the end of December 2013 despite decreases in tariffs, Dos Santos said.

Dos Santos said he also wanted to allay some of the fears around Cell C’s financial future which they have seen expressed in the media.

Cell C expects a further US$125-million foreign currency deal to be completed in the near future. They also expect this to increase to US$200-million by year-end.

Dos Santos said that Cell C’s capitalised assets grew by R2.3-billion during 2013, predominantly invested in its radio access and core network.

Cell C also maintains strong relationships with their local and international lenders, including Nedbank, DBSA, CDB, and others, Dos Santos said.
