Mobile traffic: data vs voice
Akamai has released its Q1 2015 State of the Internet report, which shows a massive increase in mobile data traffic over the last few years.
The Akamai report uses insight from mobile vendor Ericsson, which has a presence in more than 180 countries and a customer base representing more than 1,000 networks.
The Ericsson voice and data traffic chart below shows a strong increase in data traffic, with voice traffic showing nearly no growth.
The number of mobile data subscriptions is increasing – driving growth in data traffic – along with an increase in the average data volume per subscription.
Global data traffic grew around 12 percent between the fourth quarter of 2014 and the first quarter of 2015.
Ericsson explained that in mobile networks, the access medium – spectrum – is being shared by different users in the same cell.
It is therefore important to understand traffic volumes and usage patterns in order to enable a good customer experience.
