Vodafone 543 touchscreen smartphone for R500
Vodacom recently announced that it will launch the very affordable Vodafone ZTE 546 smartphone in South Africa. The device features a full Qwerty keypad, a 2.2’’ TFT display, a 2 Megapixel camera, an FM radio and Micro-SD card support.
The Vodafone ZTE 546 supports GPRS and EDGE connectivity, and comes standard with Bluetooth 2.1 and WAP. It also offers an email client, MIDP2.0 and changeable games.
In June Vodacom said that the Vodafone 546 will retail for around R400 per phone on a prepaid account, but the latest figures from the cellular operator indicate that it will actually cost around R600. No reasons were given for the sudden price increase.
The Vodafone 546 is set to reach participating Vodacom outlets at the end of July.
A touchscreen version of the Vodafone 546, the Vodafone 543, will also be available at the end of July. The indicative price for the Vodafone ZTE 543 touchscreen phone is R499, well below the R599 price tag which is expected for the Vodafone 546.
The Vodafone 543 is a touchscreen smartphone aimed at younger users and the emerging middle class. The device features a 2.4 inch touchscreen display, 1.3 Megapixel camera, stereo FM radio, MP3/MP4 player, and MicroSD slot for memory cards.
For those wanting to spend a bit more on a high end mobile phone, Vodacom has recently opened their Apple iPhone 4 pre-ordering form. While Vodacom only says that the new iPhone will be available “in the coming months”, it is rumoured that Apple’s latest phone will hit local shores in September.
