Vodafone 546 smartphone for R400

This smartphone should do very well in SA. If feels a bit cheap when you are used to a Blackberry or Nokia, but then again it is damn cheap. R400 for a smartphone is certainly not bad.

Many people going to sign a 24 month contract to get this one................ Very clever VC

The strategy should be : "Here is the handset for U for free" But boy oh boy are you gonna pay to use the thing.
 
R400 is very cheap. Still looks like a ripoff when you examine it though.

R400 for what is essentially a 4-year old phone isn't a good deal, irrespective of the low sounding price

Where does it say that it uses Symbian?
How does this even qualify as a smartphone if it doesn't even have full html browser functionality?
And who sells iphones for R400?
 
I second @Shred's opinion. Calling this a smart phone means we now have to classify all the other phones that are actual smart phones as something else - maybe super duper smart phones.

This is a plain and simple candybar phone with a basic set of features and a qwerty keypad at a very attractive price. There is nothing remotely special about it to get it to be classified as a smartphone except by some marketing !genius.
 
Unless I am misreading it states R400 / month.... multiply that by 24 and it's not very "cheap"

Basic features of a smart phone is that it can multi task and it does not run applications in a sandbox only (like J2ME), so in other words you can write system level applications and services that interact directly with the OS via given APIs.
This is what makes the apple line of fashion phones fall outside the boundaries of a smartphone and what makes the rest (WinMo, Android, Symbian and Maemo) real smartphone OSes.
Having a good level of multimedia features makes for a rich smarthphone and not just a basic business berry or e-series.
 
I think that "Per Month" is a mistake... the Article was ridden with them.

I would hope R400 is a cash price - because R400pm is way outpriced.
 
Rofl R400 cash for sure.
It's a smartphone for the masses - brilliant idea. Prolly no downloads from the web etc since it's not likely symbian / android based, but still - it's a smartphone for those who can't afford a smartphone. Sure beats a R300 pep nokia special that does little more than text.

Why would it be Symbian? And please send links for those R400 blackberries and iPhones :)

Retail and per month seem like a contradiction to me... it's obvious it's R500/R600 cash.
