According to Vodacom’s statistics, BlackBerry still dominates the smartphone market with 1,992,779 active devices on the network, followed by Android (296,978) and Apple iOS (291,616).
Only two months ago Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys revealed that they had 1.6 million active BlackBerry devices on their network, followed by 220,000 iPhones, and around 200,000 Android devices.
The latest statistics therefore not only reveal the growing popularity of Android, but also the strong growth of smartphones and tablet PCs in South Africa.
With the imminent launch of the Galaxy Nexus, which will ship with the latest Android OS called Ice Cream Sandwich, Android may strengthen its position further.
The following graph gives a visual representation of mobile OS market share on the Vodacom network.
