Flat rated smartphone data bundles from MTN
MTN is set to unveil their latest data innovation: flat rated smartphone data packages similar to the popular BlackBerry Internet service (BIS) offerings.
Serame Taukobong, MTN South Africa’s chief marketing officer, confirmed that the company is launching Smartphone Services, targeted at entry-level smartphone users.
“MTN Smartphone Services is designed to suit our smartphone users, further confirming MTNs focus on introducing services and solutions aligned to the needs of our customers,” said Taukobong.
Taukobong added that MTN Smartphone Services are similar to the Blackberry internet service, but focused towards customers using different Smartphone handsets.
MTN said that the following Smartphone Services are available for purchase:
- Nokia Smartphone Pro Service – 75MB fair use on Nokia Smartphones to access the Nokia Ovi ecosystem (Nokia Messaging, Chat, Navigation and Ovi store). Other internet usage will also deplete the fair use allowance.
- MTN Smartphone Pro Service – 75MB fair use on any Smartphone for e-mail, Instant Messaging and Navigation. Other internet usage will also deplete the fair use allowance.
- MTN Social Networking Service – 75MB fair use to access Facebook & Mxit (m.facebook.com & m.mxit.com) on any Smartphone, any other social networks will be charged for.
- MTN Opera Mini Internet Service – 75MB fair use on any Smartphone to access the internet using the MTN Branded Opera Mini browser. Customers need to ensure that they have the MTN Branded Opera Mini browser installed on their device.
“To sweeten your summer an additional MTN Smartphone Lite Service will be launched shortly. These Smartphone Services can be sold as value added Smartphone postpaid deals or purchased via the self-service channels,” said Taukobong.
MTN would not reveal pricing for these services, merely saying that “pricing for the services will be issued soon.
Speculation however suggests that the MTN Smartphone Services will be very aggressively priced, as shown in the following rumoured pricing:
- MTN Smartphone lite – R25
- MTN Smartphone Pro – R49
- Nokia Smartphone Pro – R49
- MTN Social Networking – R29
- MTN Opera Mini Internet – R35
