MTN’s bombshell mobile plan now available without changing your number

MTN has announced several improvements to its SuperFlex package, including the ability to port in your existing number.
South Africa’s second-largest mobile network operator first announced MTN SuperFlex in September, offering unlimited voice minutes and SMS messages with a customisable data allocation from R299 per month.
MTN SuperFlex is an online, SIM-only, month-to-month tariff plan that promises simplicity, customisation, and flexibility.
“No paperwork, no contract lock-in, no credit checks, and unlimited calls and SMSs,” MTN said in its announcement.
However, there was one major problem for subscribers interested in taking up the service — it is not possible to migrate an existing number onto MTN SuperFlex.
“Existing customers or those who have already ported to MTN prepaid now have the seamless ability to enjoy MTN SuperFlex using their current prepaid SIM cards and mobile numbers,” the mobile operator stated.
“This expansion means more users can experience the freedom and customisation that SuperFlex offers.”
Subscribers can also re-instate their monthly SuperFlex plans.
“This functionality is particularly useful in cases where a payment was unsuccessful,” said MTN.
The base package for R299 per month includes 10GB of data. Subscribers may upgrade this to 15GB for R399, or 20GB for R479 per month.
Upgrades and downgrades can be executed through the MTN app and take effect from your next billing date.
Unused data from the recurring subscription will automatically carry over to the following month. Any unused data value will be forfeited after two months.
Additional data can be bought at R79 for 1GB, R199 for 3GB, and R299 for 5GB.
MTN’s terms and conditions state there is no fair usage threshold for unlimited voice minutes and SMS messages. However, its acceptable use policy stipulates that the voice and SMS features are for consumer use only.
Usage is monitored, and subscribers will be notified if abuse is detected.
Should MTN detect abuse, it reserves the right to suspend your SuperFlex service.
Officially, MTN SuperFlex is a promotional product that will be available from 15 September 2023 until 29 February 2024.
MTN has reserved the right to shorten or extend the duration of the promo. It often extends promotions or makes them permanent if they are successful and prove long-term viable.
“In a world where mobile connectivity is more than just a service, MTN SuperFlex is our commitment to empowering individuals with the freedom to shape their mobile experience,” said MTN SA chief consumer officer Ernst Fonternel.
“With these new enhancements, we’re taking personalisation and convenience to the next level, ensuring that every customer’s unique needs are met.”
To join MTN SuperFlex:
- Customers may choose a new SIM/Number or use their existing prepaid number.
- Contract customers must first migrate from postpaid to prepaid, including settling their contract obligations.
- Subscribers from other networks may port to MTN. As with MTN’s contract subscribers, it is necessary to migrate to prepaid first, settling all contract obligations before the port can be executed.
MTN said it is already working on the next set of SuperFlex benefits, including eSIM capability.
