Free MTN Wikipedia access fine print

MTN recently announced that it will provide free Wikipedia access to all its subscribers, but the fine print revealed that it will only be free when using Opera Mini.

MTN’s free Wikipedia announcement followed a #NekNomination and a call from learners from the Sinenjongo High School, Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton, Cape Town.

In an open letter to Cell C, MTN, Vodacom, and 8ta (Telkom Mobile), the learners urged South African mobile providers to offer their customers free access to Wikipedia.

MTN heeded this call, saying that it is proud to be the first South African cellular network to make Wikipedia free.

However, Wikipedia will only be free on MTN’s network when when accessed through the Opera Mini browser.

The free Wikipedia access is also not available immediately as assumed by many people who watched the MTN announcement video. It will only be effective from the end of the month.

MTN was asked why it could not provide free Wikipedia through all browsers, but the company did not respond by the time of publication.

MTN also did not say why it could not immediately provide free Wikipedia access.
