Servers in the MTN Gallo Manor data centre are still offline following a power outage just after 18:00 on 3 May.
“A number of nodes at the MTN data centre were damaged yesterday as a result of a sudden power spike in the aftermath of a power outage during load shedding,” said Eben Albertyn, chief technology officer at MTN SA.
The power spike caused an entire cluster in the data centre to fail.
Albertyn said MTN sourced spares for the damaged equipment, and that their engineers are working to restore services.
“We expect the services to be fully restored by lunchtime today. MTN apologises unreservedly to its customers for any inconvenience caused.”
Reports from MTN’s customers who have received updates from the company suggest the power failure occurred when backup generators failed to kick in during load shedding on Sunday.
It is not yet clear why the generators failed, or why the necessary spares weren’t on-hand to repair the networking gear that was damaged.
