Hidden WhatsApp features only power users know about

WhatsApp recently launched its application for Windows and Mac computers, allowing users to message from their desktop on the same account as their smartphone.

WhatsApp’s continued growth comes, in part, from the fact that it is available on multiple platforms, including Apple iPhones, Android devices, Windows Phone, and PC.

The service also allows users to perform a lot more than just send text messages, images, and voice notes, and make calls to other contacts.

The list below details several features which many users do not know about, which can enhance your experience on the platform.

See what time contacts received and read your messages

You can see when a message was delivered and read by a contact in WhatsApp.

In iOS, swipe left on a message in a chat to open the Message Info Screen. This will show the time your message was delivered and the time it was read.

In Android, hold down on a message until it is highlighted and select the Options menu on the top right of the screen. Tap Info to see the message details.

Check how many messages you have sent a contact, and how much storage space WhatsApp is using

Users can see how much storage space WhatsApp is taking up on their device and how many messages they have sent a specific contact.

In iOS, go to Settings > Account > Storage Usage. At the bottom of the screen there is a Messages/Size option, which lets you see how many messages you have sent someone and how much space the conversation is taking up.

Selecting a contact provides a detailed breakdown of your interactions with them.

Clear or Delete all Chats

If you want to start fresh and clear all your Chats, go to Settings > Chats > Clear All Chats, in iOS.

In Android, go to Settings > Chats > Chat History > Clear All Chats.

To delete all Chats in iOS, select the Chats screen, tap Edit on the top left, and select Delete All.

In Android, go to Settings > Chats > Chat History > Delete All Chats.

Mute Group Chats

To mute Group Chats, open the chat and tap on the Group Chat name at the top of the screen. Select the Mute option, which gives you different mute time frames.

Hide when you were last online

WhatsApp allows you to disable contacts from seeing when you were last online. Disabling this means contacts will not be able to see when you were last online and vice versa.

In iOS, go to Settings > Account > Privacy > Last Seen and select your desired option.

In Android, got to Settings > Account > Privacy > Last Seen.

Stop saving photos from messages

By default, WhatsApp saves every photo you receive to your device. To disable this in iOS, go to Settings > Chats > and turn off Save Incoming Media.

In Android, go to Settings > Data Usage > Media Auto-Download. Settings can be customised based on the data connection you use.

Disable Read Receipts

If you want to disable the Read Receipt option in WhatsApp, you can do so by accessing Settings > Account > Privacy > Read Receipts in iOS.

In Android, access Settings > Account > Privacy > Read Receipts.

Turning off Read Receipts means you will not be able to see read receipts from other people and vice versa.

Send your location

You can share your geographic location with contacts through WhatsApp. In iOS, open a chat, tap the “up arrow” icon on the bottom left of the screen, and select Share Location.

In Android, select the paperclip icon on the top right of the display, and select the Location option.

You can also share the location of a nearby business.
