Beware of Windows Update ransomware
An AVG researcher has discovered a new piece of ransomware called Fantom, which fools users by posing as a critical Windows update.
According to a report by HotHardware, the ransomware takes the appearance of a Windows screen “installing an update” if executed.
What it is actually doing, though, is encrypting a user’s documents and files.
“Fantom is based on the open-source EDA2 ransomware project, and there’s no way to decrypt the files without the culprit’s help,” stated the report.
The scam starts with a pop-up which is labelled as a critical update from Microsoft. Once a users accepts the fake update, Fantom run its encryption.
