The “programming language of all programming languages” – C – is in decline, according to programming language indexes.

The Tiobe Index and the PYPL Index both show that C has dropped in popularity from December 2015 to December 2016.

“The language was in a range of 15%-20% for more than 15 years and this year it suddenly started to suffer,” said Tiobe.

Tiobe said C is “not a language that you think of while writing programs for popular fields such as mobile apps or websites”.

“It is not evolving that much and there is no big company promoting the language,” it said.

The table below shows the most popular programming languages in the world, based on the Tiobe and PYPL indexes, and their change from 2015 to 2016.

Calculating the rankings

PYPL – “The more a language tutorial is searched, the more popular the language is assumed to be. The raw data comes from Google Trends.”

Tiobe – “The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers worldwide, courses, and third-party vendors. Popular search engines are also used to calculate the ratings.”
