Coolest development in technology for 2012
A panel of South African experts have listed Google’s fibre project and entry into the tablet market, the proliferation of apps in education in medicine, and the emergence of smartphones to rival the iPhone as some of the larger developments in the tech space during 2012.
To find out what the coolest developments in the technology industry was in 2012, we asked some of South Africa’s most informed people for their insights. The panel included:
- Rudolph Muller, founder and editor of MyBroadband
- Gareth Vorster, editor of BusinessTech
- Arthur Goldstuck, MD of research firm World Wide Worx and editor of Gadget.co.za
Panelists weren’t restricted to a set list to choose from and could name any development in technology and telecommunications that they thought qualified.
Muller chose Google entering the tablet PC market with the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, and the search giant launching its own 1Gbps broadband service.
He gave a special mention to Microsoft Windows 8.
Vorster said that the proliferation of apps, particularly where it can really make a difference such as in the world of health and education has been an exciting.
According to Goldstuck the emergence of a wide range of smartphones that could all challenge for the title of best or coolest phone of the year, as opposed to the usual (single) suspect ranked as his top development of 2012.
He also have a special mention to Apple admitting that a smaller format tablet was necessary, and producing the iPad Mini.
