Telkom Northgate downtime explained

Telkom ADSL

Summary: Telkom subscribers in Northgate and Olivedale experienced downtime due to cable theft after excavations in the area.

Telkom responded to queries about the outage which left Olivedale and Northgate residents without internet or voice services for at least two days, blaming it on cable theft.

According to Telkom spokesperson Pynee Chetty, Johannesburg Water was working in Hyperion Street in Olivedale, busy with excavation work.

They left pipes housing Telkom connections exposed after the excavations, which allowed criminals access to the Telkom cable system. They proceeded to steal cable linking a node which at full capacity can serve up to 2000 connections.

Chetty further explained that Telkom staff worked through the night to restore the service, which was completed in the early hours of this morning.

While services to subscribers in Olivedale, Northgate and surrounding areas has been restored, if users are still experiencing issues Chetty suggested contacting Telkom through the normal reporting channels, which includes logging a fault on the Telkom website, or phoning the Telkom call centre.
