Daylight robbery from cellular companies: IFP
The IFP has said that that the cellular companies are ripping people off, and that the Consumer Commission is incapable of addressing this issue.
“How much do our government in general and Minister Rob Davies in particular really protect our consumers?” asked IFP MP Mario GR Oriani-Ambrosini in parliament today (28 February 2012).
Oriani-Ambrosini said that he was incapable of addressing the grievances of a multitude of consumers against our banks, insurance companies and cellular communication companies, despite trying for two years to put it on the agenda of the Portfolio Committee on Trade & Industry.
“It seems that these three groups of companies are above any type of accountability. The Hon Fubbs and the ANC management team in that Committee have thus far refused to hold these groups of companies accountable,” said Oriani-Ambrosini.
“I have been the victim of extortion by Vodacom which forced me to pay outrageous international data roaming charges which it couldn’t even begin to explain or document,” he explained. “My wife has been the victim of an aggressive marketing scheme of Cell C, which borders on fraud.”
“If I, as a Member of Parliament, could find no redress from their customer services, ordinary citizens are left with no help.”
The IFP said that they will be launching a website called www.daylightrobbery.org where citizens can share their experiences with the cellular companies, banks and the insurance industry.
“We commit ourselves to collate and personally submit to the Consumer Commission, the Hon Fubbs and the Hon Davies in the hope that they may finally choose to listen to the voice of the South African people,” the IFP said.
The IFP added that government needs to “stop protecting those who, through effective racketeering, are imposing on us all some of the world’s highest costs for banking, insurance and telecommunications, in little real protection to be found in the Consumer Protection Act.”
