Hi guys,

Just to save you all some grief. I bought a Canyon CN-WF518 USB Wifi dongle today (R230 odd). It uses a Ralink RT73 chipset, which has MacOSX drivers and a configuration app - works like a charm:

Now, Canyon's website has a driver:

http://www1.canyon-tech.com/product.../Wireless_Products_IEEE_802.11g/CN-WF518/Down

I downloaded this file, only to find that I cannot open it. OSX tried to open it in Excel, which obviously didn't work. I suspected a stuffit archive, but that's not the case either.

Thinking it's maybe for OS Classic, I tried it on the old Mac on 9.2, also no joy. Can someone more clued-up than me look at the link and tell me what the file is for? If I can make it work under OS 9.2, that would be fantastic!

Thanks

Lazy b@$tards!

Ok, try this - it worked for me.
Go to the canyon download page and rightclick the mac driver file. Download linked file.
Go to the downloaded file and rename it to CN-WF518_Mac_drv.dmg
Mount the disk image and it contains install packages for 10.3 and 10.4

Hope it works for you.

Yes I did kept getting 404s - someone setup win2k3 server like their behinds.

What do you mean it's big? 1.5mb for the driver plus utility?

@koffiejunkie - is this for your mini?

bwana, yes, until I can afford the Airport/Blutooth internal card. Actually, I bought it to hook up my dad and the kids computers, but I thought I'd try it on the Mac just in case.

Now I just need to get a USB hub so I can use the keyboard, mouse and wireless all at the same time :-)

I haven't tried yet - deleted the file as soon as it didn't work first time round - but from what you have described, it looks like the content is the same.

Hi Guys .... just what i've been looking for.

Which shop or where in DBN can i find the Canyon CN-WF518 USB Wifi dongle ?

I have a guy who's offering me the AirPort Extreme card for R250.00 but its for my folks mac mini, ive got some tutorials on how to install the airport extreme card on the mac mini but god forbid if i f-up LOL

Thanks !

The thing to watch out of is if the mini already has the mezzanine board in. That's the little board that the Airport card and the bluetooth sits on. Maybe you should open it first and check before you buy, because if it doesn't you'll have to buy the upgrade kit. In which case a USB dongle would be cheaper.

If you can't find the Canyon in DBN, I'm sure you could always phone PC Internation in JHB and ask them to mail it to you. If you go that route, make sure you do things in this order:

1. Install the drivers (see links at the top of this thread)
2. Reboot
3. Plug in the USB dongle
4. The Ralink app will come up - don't touch it! Go to your preferences --> network. It will tell you there's a new device - follow the prompts to allow it to be added.
5. Now go back to the Ralink app and configure your connection.
