Hi Guys...

So ive been reading up on CPU lapping...
For those of you that dont know, u basically sand ur cpu down with very fine sandpaper to get a perfecly flat surface for perfect heat distribution.

ive read a couple of guides ect, just want to know if any of you have done it, and with results?

and if you used wet or dry sand paper?

Funny you should post this - and now. Was getting annoyed at my (old) laptop fan running nonstop whilst doing some cleaning up on it, so I pulled out the P4 and lapped it with some 1000 grit wet and dry, but used it dry. Popped it back in with a touch of cheapie gigabyte thermal compound and not only has the temp dropped from the mid 40's down to the mid 30's, but the fan has stopped going all the time. What a pleasure. Also did the little copper block / heatsink / fan unit too. I think that was more convex than the cpu to be honest.
You just have to have tiny girlie fingers to avoid bending the pins...:)

Ok, So I went over to the hardware store and got a some 600, 800, and 1200 grain sandpaper.
The lapping process took me bout 30minutes, and the total cost was R7.60.

Like I said, my previous idle temp was mid 40's. My CPU fan was turning at an average of about 930RPM.

Now the CPU is sitting at 38 degrees while im typing this, and the fan RPM doesnt go higher than 890.:p

For less than R10, I lowered my CPU temp by 5degrees. Not bad.:D
