I decided I want to do a degree in information technology - purely because I have no other formal qualification, and because it'll keep me entertained and out of trouble.

The problem is most places, like Unisa, require matric, or some other qualification, what are alternatives in getting round this? There's no ways I'm interested in doing matric :p and I some how don't think they'll believe me if I tell them I'll do extremely well because its what I do daily, and have been doing daily for the last 10 years....

I also like the idea of doing it through an international university, but the same problem applies...

You don't need matric to write your MCSD exams. And it's a pretty good qualification to have

You will need to get a bridging course at the very least..

But for a degree, unfortunately you have no alternative but to do matric... its a requirement.

You could find out what other qualifications amount to an NQF Level 4/5 (can't rem which matric is).. and maybe use that.... but it will be a long shot...

Done - and considered it a waste of time :p I want a degree...

Done Diploma in Network Engineering, MCSE, MCSD and MCBA (for reference :))

Thats what I'm worried about - It used to be a requirement until you were older than 23, but I see thats 45 now.

Its a requirement regardless nowadays... since there are certain basics that they need to know you can cope with....

But a matric isn't difficult to get anymore I don't think... it'll take 6 months, and then it opens you up to pretty much any degree/diploma you want..

OR you could take the round about route and go for a diploma at one of the Tech's.. build that up and i think they can use it in place of a matric for degrees

You get an age exemption and do a diploma first.

Isn't a diploma three years now? I have a Diploma in Network Engineering through Varsity College, they admitted me based on an interview.

Yea but it may help you later in life man.

I have a full-time job - and it pays quite well, but I have nothing except word of mouth to fall back on, hence one of the reasons I want to do something else.

Why don't you have matric already? What happened?

I don't know what the universities' policies are these days, but their is something like an age exemption if you are 23<. Thesedays many univ. also require mandatory entry/access exams because the academic levels of many schools are so crap. Phone up reception and ask to speak to the faculty secretary of the specific faculty and ask her (they are most often female) these things.

Who is the "diploma" certified by?

Unless its certied by the SAQA it doesn't mean much really...

A diploma from VC can be 1 year, which is where the problem comes in...

My suggestion is to go and chat to someone at UCT and just see what your options are.

Got expelled, very religious school - I wouldn't be pushed into their religion - LONG story - Sunday Times even did a story on it.

Think I'll try call them up and see what they can do.

I'll have to check, not to sure if Varsity College is considered a reputable institution - if it is allowed, I passed with 89.9%, so that should help.

Do a search on google for the UNISA access course.

One of the guys working with me did it. Afaik after you have done the course you will receive a matric exemption certificate from education department, Umlazi I think.

Since I'm studying with UNISA let me explain how it works:

No Matric no Degree / BSc - its the law in South Africa, no exceptions. The department of higher education wants to change this (soon) and I agree with them. But do not wait.

There is no such thing as an age exemption!!!!!!

You get university exemption after 25 which means you only needed to pass certain subjects with certain grades if your younger than 25 to study at university. If your 25 or older you just need a plan matric.

What you can do is basic non-degree modules like MAT011 (High school maths). This will determine if your able to understand the maths used in the degree.

On Diplomas there is mixed info on this, generally you need matric or technical school equivalent. Many fly-by-nights offer diploma course which have no legal merit.

So for now your only option are access courses (if your black as whites and coloureds seem to be left out of this pool) and/or to complete your matric. Being hounest your remarks on not wanting to complete matric do show a bit of arrogance and I'm wondering if you have the commitment to actually study further?

Its not hard to study for a BSc, heck I'm doing it, its just a lot of commitment and being humble and accepting I do not know everything. I'm not trying to put you off as I encourage everyone to continue studying.

I would never have guessed you do not have matric, xrapidx.

You seemed well educated, from you posts.

It does not mean lesser educated people are not wise, those are just my assumptions playing mindtricks on me ! Also, you said you are buying a R 2m house, which implies success, which *normally* imples a good education.

Again my fault for being narrowminded.
