Operation CPU & HS lapping

Ok, I'm bored so I have decided to lap my Q6600 & CM Hyper TX2.

Software: Prime95 & Speedfan

Prior to lapping
............Idle....100%
Core0----40----70
Core1----37----67
Core2----40----69
Core3----37----65

After lapping
............Idle....100%
Core0----33----51
Core1----30----48
Core2----32----50
Core3----26----47

I ran the test longer after lapping 15min vs 20min but the tempertures remained stable for the additional 5mins.
At idle the the difference does not appear to be that much but under 100% load the results are great!
My GPU is also running 5deg cooler which must be due to lower ambient temps in the case.

Joker? Lapping works. Just get proper heat compound at the same time.

Got some Arctic Silver 5.

Gotto switch pc off now to remove cpu & heatsink. Will fire up laptop in the meantime.

Wish me luck :erm:
 
Remember that the best results are from lapping both CPU and heatsink..
The tx2 is pretty flat already, however ur cpu...

I lapped my FX120 and Q9400, and now run 1x (from push-pull prev.) 120 Zalman Fan @ 1200rpm:
3.6GHz (1.34v) and doesn't go over 60 deg. C.

Decent temps and silence, I'm happy.

Patience, I just got all the stuff layed out on the table to start. Will be back later tonight with results hopefully.
 
Currently running at stock (2.4GHz) but will OC when done.

When I started the cpu on 320grit paper you could see all the highs & lows, looked a bit like the lunar surface. HS is not as bad.

Some supper then I move on to 600grit. Hopefully the 600, 800, 1200 & 1500 grit goes quicker as it's essentially just buffing things out a bit at each step.
 
What are the steps involved in this? I'm running an Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 with the stock HSF.. Keen on doing this.

How much thermal paste should I apply once done?
Asking now so I hopefully have answers when I'm done.

This the one method I usually use

and not a lot as the HS does most of the hard work.

Edit: I will see how far I can push my rig then start lapping, it takes all the excitement out OC if I just go straight to the end result.

Far as I know you shouldn't spread it yourself. When you put the HSF onto the CPU it will spread automatically. If you spread it yourself, you might cause gaps in the paste which results in less effective heat transfer.

NOOOOooooo0000! Just one small pea size in the middle, do not spread. When you place the HS on the CPU it will spread itself properly. Only put the HS on once, do not remove to check and do not twist and shift if possible. Line up everything, holes, etc and then place HS down on CPU, click in latches. Thats it.
