I recently opened my case and to my horror saw about +-2cm thick dust/dirt over my mobo and cpu fan.I rubbed some of the dirt off and disconnected my cpu fan so I could clean it.I did so and when placing my cpu fan back i mistakely rubbed some of my termal paste off.My temp readings are as follows Temp1=30C Core0=30C Core1=25C Core2=40C Core3=36C it maybe no problem but what are normal idle temps for the Q8200.

shouldnt be more than 5C difference between cores, I would suggest you re-seat the heatsink. Google "Arctic Ice". They have a fantastic guide for applying thermal paste. I have the Q6600, which is one of the original 65nm quad chips. It runs a little hotter than the newer 45nm quads. Depending on the ambient Room temps, I never go over 55C (but I have an aftermarket cooler and OC my chip to 3.0ghz). On the stock intel cooler, I would max at about 65C (non OC). Idle temps in my opinion are about 5-10 degrees more than the room temp.

did you remove just the fan or the heatsink as well???

if you only removed the fan I don't see how thermal paste could have come off as the heatsink is still firmly mounted.

If you removed the heatsink completely then you should in fact clean off the old thermal paste, assuming it's been on there for quite a while, then apply a new layer before remounting.

+1

Your temps are a little erratic but idle temps are not a reliable indicator - put the system under heavy load and see what your temps look like then, anything over 60 degrees isn't good.

And don't worry about the temperature differential on the cores, all LGA775 quad-core CPUs suffer from this to some extent as they are essentially 2 dual-cores in a single package. For example my QX9650 @ 4GHz idles at 29 degrees on cores 2 and 3, but 37 degrees on cores 0 and 1 - when loaded this difference increases to over 10 degrees at times, and yes the cooler is mounted correctly.

If it's the stock Intel HSF then it's a single unit, so removing the fan is removing the heatsink.

while we are on the topic, anyone have any idea what the safe range would be for my laptop which happens to be under heavy load when gaming every now and then?
I have a core i3 CPU and a mobility Radeon HD5145

I know that laptop chips can run a bit hotter then desktop chips.
In my previous laptop i had the nvidia graphics card got fried due to overheating (rumours of those cards having bad thermal paste have since surfaced)

I ran 4 memtest applications and the temp went to core0=max54 core1=max43 core2=max52 core3=max52 at +-80%cpu usage.Is this expected?

It was the solder IIRC, not the thermal paste... but what are your temps? Anything up to 70 degrees is probably okay for a laptop.

That's alright, but as IRG said, also try Prime95 and/or OCCT to stress the CPU 100%.

How long must I run the program?I ran it for 20minutes and the average temp between the cores were 62C.

It wont get hotter than 62 after 20 min. Thats an OK temp in cool weather! If u worried about temps, get a better cpu cooler. Prime95 will run your CPU hotter than any other normal app or game can!
Try intel burn test.. Hottest i've seen my cpu
