My daughter's cellphone has died (liquid damage and not worth repairing), and I've run out of half-decent second hand phones to give her. She goes to university 800km away in January, so I'd like her to have something reliable and under warranty to take with, and instead of buying a phone for cash, I was thinking of the following:-

Take out a new contract (weekender) to get a new phone for her - she'll be able to use the free minutes from both contracts with ease :-)
Convert her old number to prepaid in July next year (when the Autopage contract expires)
And then the tricky bit - swap the number on the new contract for one now on prepaid, without ending the contract prematurely.

Can you do that on Vodacom? I called 111 and was told I could, but two different Vodashops have said I can't. If it's not possible, any other advice on how best (and cheapest) to get her sorted out would be gratefully accepted.

As she is going to stuck in a new city miles away from her friends, I'd prefer that she be able to keep her existing number, and the cost of 8 months duplicate subscriptions is easier to deal with than a new phone for cash, especially as it gives her an extra chunk of free minutes to keep in touch.

Hi colin

This will not be possible , in essence if i read what you needed to do this would mean that you will have 2 numbers exactly the same on the network.

I don't think I need 2 numbers exactly the same.

If, before the swap I have e.g. 082 123 4567 on contract and 082 987 6543 on pre-paid, after the swap I want 082 123 4567 to be pre-paid, and 082 987 6543 to be the contract number.

Yes its possible then.

Hi Colin. Sorry for replying only now, but thank you for posting your query in the public forum. As Vodacom said, yet something like that might be possible...but keep in mind the following.

1. You mentioned that the contract is with Autopage. Autopage is a seperate company from VSP and we do not use the same systems...therefore a number port would have to be done first I would think.

2. This is a request that would have to go to IT department and be motivated by a store. This is not something that can be done in a normal retail stores (we can change your number but not play twister with it yet :-)

When you cancell the contract with Autopage make absolutely sure that they convert it to prepaid and not actually cancell the number completely as the number will then be lost and recycled to be issued to someone else.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

There is enough doubt in my mind to make it not worth pursuing right now, as I don't really feel like fighting to get it done, and I strongly suspect that when it comes to it, I'll be told it's impossible. Then I'll have to lose my temper and shout and then I'll have to start on the medication again :-D

I'm inquiring about have thing done for a family member and have been told it's impossible.

VD, where do I need to start?

VD....I am willing to help with this...but when I tried to do this for one of my corp clients I was told it is not possible. Can you please advise what channel to use if this is in fact a possiblilty?

It is not possible to swap the MSISDN's. What Colin 62 should have done was after converting the number to prepaid , apply for another contract using the existing prepaid number. If it was possible to do a MSISDN swap on a prepaid number then it might have worked.

No , the problem is with prepaid , as MSISDN swaps are not permitted on prepaid

Sorry, I'm still confused.

You do allow a pre-paid number to migrate to the contract system, don't you?

Can't the pre-paid number be migrated to a phoneless contract, and then swapped?

Yes you can do a prepaid to contract conversion. This will mean that you would need to be credit vetted for another contract. Then do a MSISDN swap on that number which if i can remember correctly was R250.00. Then we would need to release the number from that contract and another MSISDN swap needs to be done.

HI VD. What department will have to do the swap? I can do MSISDN swaps on my system, effectly just a number change. But the system gives me a list of numbers the client can choose from, so I cant swap the numbers on my side. No store that ginggs goes to will know how to do this. More information will be needed before this is attempted because once the prepaid is converted to a contract and then he might hit his head against a wall. I want to prevent that.
