Hey guys,

does anyone here use some kind of wireless Satellite internet access? I heard one of my friends on a farm has a wireless connection. He says he is connected 24/7 and he pays about R300 pm. Sounds very interesting to me. Does anyone here know anything about such services?

You don't want it if you can get something else.

Satellite = lag

It might be good for downloading depending on the configuration, but anything that needs to be real-time (Games, Skype etc) will suck.

My friend said it's great for browsing. He prefers it to his old EDGE connection, so I thought it sounded okay.

Maybe I should go visit him and see how it is...

I would also like to know about satellite internet for my parents. They stay on a farm, far away from town and don't have cellphone signal, and no land lines which makes it impossible to get anything else.

So far I only know that Satellite internet is available almost anywhere. I'm searching for an ISP that would be able to give me more info. I'll PM you if I find something.

Here is what I know:

1. You get the Vsat Hardware from Telkom, they will be able to provide the prices for you concerning this.

2. @lantic provides the internet access for you - R249 for 500MB :( or 3G - depending on the package you take with Telkom.

3. The speed of the Vsat is the same as a normal dialup. :(

4. They recommend Vsat for people who have no other option for internet.

So it seems it doesn't even get near an EDGE connection. Should be good for Park@82's parents.

I think you are on the same brain wave as me - or anyway i agree its got potential. Using cables is just primative.
This offer is just very very bad at round about dialup speed eish.

SEARCH

Do you people never search the forums ????

It is all here answered MANY times

TELKOM SPACESTREAM ( VSAT )

Now you can look that up on the Telkom website

Yeah guess I could've searched, BUT at first I wasn't looking for VSAT. My friend uses something called GWISA (if I remember correctly) and I actually wanted to know about ANY products that can give me wireless internet access in a remote area.

Also this forum is really quiet so no harm done.

Referring to Wireless Internet access via one of the local Wireless ISP, satellite will be far more than that

Farmer in Laingsburg, Western Cape is paying Telkom R1700/month for 3 Gb = +-R600/month
Satellite service from Telkom via Gilat satellite service

Pity this guy cannot get some Wireless kit and setup his own link into town (Laingsburg) has ADSL.
Illegal I know, but this calls for drastic measure and their is no cell coverage, no WiSP, pathetic Telkom phone lines
