Hi guys,

My HDD in my media center died a day ago. I think it is physically fine but the controller seems absolutly dead (does not even detect in the BIOS).

How could I go about trying to recover the data? Would just replacing the PCB with an identical one work (Seagate Barracude 7200.11 500GB), or is that a dead end.

Oh, and the drive is sitll under warranty, so would prefer some method that will still allow me to get it replaced post the data-recovery. Also, I am not really prepared to spend on this, as all the data on the drive is downloaded content, and as such, If I have to pay for a recovery, I might as well just re-download the data.

Thanks in advance :)

Those 500gig 7200.11 are famously bad! There was a firmware fix for affected drives, available from seagate. But it had to be flashed before it bricked itself. I flashed mine within two weeks of buying it (lucky I found out about the problem first). There is a whole other thread here on mybb covering the 7200.11 problem, and there is a mybb member who can help. Just search for it...

Hey Ponder, IRG. Thanks for the fast replies. Looks like i am indeed suffering from the Firmware issue :( checked on the label, and I am indeed running SD15 :(

Am on the phone with Ingram Micro (formerly Storgate) as the drive is still under warranty, and I hope that maybe they decide to stop being loosers and actually do something about it.

Thanks IRG for the link to instructions on how to fix the damn thing... If I fail with Ingram Micro, will be going the self-fix route. BTW, does anybody in or around JHB north have the required cable lying around? Really not in the mood to mission around looking for one.

Thanks guys :)

meh, so I went to Ingram Micro, and showed them that as Seagate representatives in SA, they should be obliged to fix the firmware issue. They replied that there was no way that they could do it (they some completely technically incompetant) as they do not have the skills or equipment (even though I showed them the instructions posted earlier on in the thread). Also, they repeatedly stated that they are not responsible for data recovery, even though the official Seagate press release states that they will assist with any data recovery. They said that my only hope of getting the data back was to leave the drive with them, where they would then ship it to Seagate in Europe which would take minimum 2 weeks (I read that as more like 2 months).

Eventually I just decided to ditch the data, and just get the drive replaced. I was not prepared to wait for 2 weeks for a hard-drive.

Moral of the story is that support in this country is basically non-existant :( bastids....
