I am leaving in 2 weeks time for Chicago, USA. I am wanting to buy the, soon to be released, 3G version of the 64GB iPad. However, it will take the new, smaller, micro-sim cards. Will Vodacom be bringing out micro sims in the near future to be used with the 3G iPads ? I understand that the 3G iPads to be sold in the USA will be open to be used by any network. I also saw pictures showing the new micro-sims alongside a regular sim, and the only difference, appears to be that there is less of the (non-used) board material - the gold bits in the middle are the same size and shape as the regular sim. So it has been suggested that you only need to trim down a regular sim, to the same size and shape as the micro-sim, and it should work. Any ideas on this ?

Mod Edit: MicroSIM are now officially available, details: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...Pad-iPhone-4&p=4269299&viewfull=1#post4269299

I am also quite curious to know when Vodacom will start producing them. The rumoured 4th gen iPhone will also use MircoSIMs. So they will have to start producing them shortly. The other thought I had was to buy one of those SIM cloning tools to clone your regular SIM onto a MircoSIM.

The sim cards have been ordered for internal testing purposes and will only be available to the consumer sometime in July.

Good news. So does that mean Vodacom's release date for the 4th Gen iPhone and/or iPad is July? ;)

Don't know yet Morkhans , did ask but i can't remember what was said...............:)

Let's wait for the media release first........its the right thing to do.....;)

You guys are just teasing now!!! I sooo can't wait to get a 3G iPad and my new iPhone :)

Why did Apple buck the trend and go for a micro SIM anyway? Now everyone has to jump to their demands because they felt the need. I hope the iPad fails because of that stupid error*smile*

Actually it does look like you can simply cut a normal SIM down to size if need be. The contact parts are exactly the same it's just the form factor that differs.

I also cant wait for the new 4G iPhone!

Got my 3G iPhone the day Vodacom released it in SA, skipped the 3GS....and now my 2 year contract is almost 20 months old. Perfect timing! :)

Would love to know what VodacomData knows. ;)

The MIcro Sim (No more confusion)

Hi guys. I am just posting this to clear up any confusion regarding the Micro Sim.

The 64K Micro SIM that can be used with devices such as the newly launched Apple iPad, is now available from Vodacom. The new Micro SIM card operates in exactly the same manner as a normal SIM card with the only exception being it is smaller in physical size. The Apple iPad, although not yet available from Vodacom, will require the Micro SIM with a data package activated in order to be used on the Vodacom network.

Activation
The Micro SIM may be activated on Contract, Top Up or Prepaid.
New Contract: New customer can obtain the Micro SIM when signing a new Contract
Existing Customers can perform a SIM swap if they no longer need to use their existing SIM or the
Micro SIM can be set up as a Twin Call SIM so that the existing Data Contract can be used either on the existing standard SIM, or on the Micro SIM on the iPad. The only constraint is that both SIMs will not function at the same time. One device will need to be disconnected when the other SIM is required to connect. (OC EDIT: ALTHOUGHT THE MEMO DOES NOT MENTION THE DATA SIM PRODUCT, I WOULD ASSUME THAT THE MICRO SIM SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO BE ACTIVATED AS A DATA SIM ALSO)

Prepaid: Activate a Prepaid Starter Pack and perform a SIM swap with the Micro SIM.

Please note:
• The Micro SIM is designed to function only with devices that support the Micro SIM form factor, e.g. Apple iPad. Refer to device manual.
• Any attempt to use this SIM in devices not designed to support the Micro SIM may damage both the SIM and the device.

So, if a store tells you that you may only have a Micro Sim on a contract, then please insist that you can have it on prepaid also and a mere sim swop will be required. This sim swop must be done in store though.

Just to add OC, the iPhone 4 also uses the new MicroSIM.
