Telkom AccessMax???

Telkom just phoned me and asked if I wanted to part of the AccessMax trial. Apparently some new offering they have, probably using the new UMC's which have been deployed. Does anyone have any details on AccessMax? or is anyone already part of this trial?

You lucky bugger, make sure no fine-print in the trial agreement :_)

Ok... After numerous phone calls, I have the details:

Telkom is deploying a new technology called AccessMax in an effort to improve ADSL installation times. Basically an AccessMax solution is put down between the exchange and your house/business/whatever. They run fiber between the exchange and the AccessMax box and then copper from the AccessMax to the house (as with normal ADSL). So from a user perspective it should be the same. They are not changing their ADSL offerings and the normal ADSL fees will apply.
Although for the trial I will get free Installation and one month's free line rental. I then have an option to either scrap it or start paying.

They are only offering this to 4 users in the hatfield area. So if you're one of the lucky ones... talk to me!

Most people won't even know if their ADSL is implemented using the new AccessMax technology.

Costs you nothing extra ... they are simply moving the DSLAM unit from the exchange down into the neighbourhood.

Exchange -----(Fibre Optic) ----> AccessMax -----(copper)---> Your home
 
tibby.dude - I asked jimbob, since he is in the whole trial ordeal.. I dont believe telkom will do that for FREE.. If you have first hand knowledge about pricing, then please comment.
 
Boys and girls. Telkom is deploying VDSL...

Was wondering when this was coming... You can up the speed offerings on VDSL even more than normal DSL too...

Yep we really do need people to scrap their existing modems and offer them speeds faster than 24Mbps which is the maximum of ADSL2+.

We now are just getting 1Mbps at a huge cost ... VDSL ... funny.

Kinda sceptical about that vDSL - bit of a jump from 512kbs to 54mbs. By the time they started offering those high speeds it would obsolete.
 
Other than that the Telkom CEO mentioned a concerted VDSL rollout at our meeting with him in October, no.
 
I can c where this is going. Telkom will charge everyone for VDSL, then make the line speed 512K and tell them that they only NEED it to be 512, and that 24MB/s is just too fast and using that speed would be abusing the system.

But I'll have to give telkom some credit, eventually they will give us 24MB/s lines. We'll be able to download for a full 15 minutes and then our internet access will be cut-off, having reached our 3GB cap! :D

More Info on ADSL2+ (24Mbit)

Just to let you know that even if the new medium (ADSL2+) is implemented, connection speeds are dependant on the distance to the exchange. Have a read:

There is one major drawback to the high connection speeds being promoted by ambitious new local-loop unbundlers – very few customers will be able to get them.

The bandwidth which DSL technologies can deliver over a telephone line falls off sharply with distance. For example, ADSL2+ can deliver its maximum of 24Mb only within 300 metres of the telephone exchange. Bandwidth continues to fall with distance dropping to 8Mb at most by 3000 metres (roughly 10,000 feet).
