A number of us Pierre van Ryneveld (Centurion) residents have discovered via the MyBB forums that we share a similar ADSL experience - our line drops and resyncs every 54 - 59 minutes. There are short periods where this does not happen but they never last long. One of the forumites (Mr. Jax) has also reported poor and erratic latency/ping when gaming on local servers (I still have to test this on my side). Our SNR and Attenuations readings all seem to be fine - this is confirmed by Telkom.

So the plan of action is as follows:
1. If you live in PvR and experience these constant disconnects - phone Telkom on 0800 375 375 (free from a telkom line) and log a fault. Tell the person that you're talking to that others in PvR are experiencing the same problem. Suggest that there might be a problem at the exchange.
2. They will probably test and/or reset your line. Be patient and allow them to do this. In our experience it doesn't help but it's part of their MO and they'll probably need to prove that they did this before further investigations are allowed.
3. You will be sent a reference number via sms at the end of the call. Post it in this thread.
4. As soon as we have enough of these reference numbers we'll all e-mail Telkom with the list of reference numbers (I'll write and post the e-mail template in this thread).

Let's get this sorted out.

I'm experiencing the same problem but I'm next door in Lyttelton. Think it might be related?

I have the same problem, here in PvR. Phoned Telkom, they didn't give me reference number. They just reset my line and set the speed down to 3 meg :/ Counting down the minutes to the next sync drop... What line speeds do you guys have?

Yep still dropping.. if I phone again they are probably gonna take me down to 2 meg :'(

I'm syncing at 4096, my local ping is about 450ms. Here's a graph of some typical disconnects I'm getting: http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=16211&cat=500

Not sure if it's the same problem the people in PvR are having?

Sync'ing at 4meg with the following line stats(which are pretty good):
DOWN SNR: 29dB
DOWN ATTEN:16dB
UP SNR: 14dB
UP ATTEN: 8dB
^^ and it's been like that for a year.

I can state with 100% confidence that it's not a line quality problem causing all these disconnects, its too perfectly timed; always between 54-59 minutes...always.

Ye mine was stable at 4 meg as well. The good news is my line will probably keep disconnecting even if they take it down to 1 meg, then they will have to send someone to the exchange.

My stats:
DOWN SNR: 26.3 dB
DOWN ATTEN: 23 dB
UP SNR: 13 dB
UP ATTEN: 8 dB

I have a 4 meg line as well but luckily they haven't downgraded the line speed as a solution yet. Perhaps you should phone again, but make sure you get a reference number this time and please post it in the thread as well.

Who the hell is Pierre van Ryneveld and why should I care that his ADSL is not working? :D

Seriously though.... when people band together like this to complain to Telkom... I'm always scared that Telkom's response will be to pull the service and tell everybody that ADSL is no longer available in that area.

Yeah, that won't happen - Telkom knows the data market is their future. Also, they're making money off us so why would they leave? Do you think they aren't used to complaints?

True. Also because it is a densely populated area with several (plenty) of security/gated complexes.

Martin,

I'm also in PvR, but haven't experienced anything like this (yet). At least I'm aware of it now and should anything similar happen I'll log a call with Telkom and post the call number. Good luck - this must be very frustrating!

No thanks, not for me... :)

I also stay in PvR, and I must say I have no problems and of late I have also noticed that I get 60kb downloads after midnight to 5am on my 384 line.
