Cell C - Zain partnership promises roaming savings

erm.... excuse my ignorance but who the hell is Zain? and where do they come from? The article is not very clear in describing who this company is and why anybody should be happy about this partnership?

Zain Group, is a mobile telecommunications company founded in 1983 in Kuwait as MTC or Mobile Telecommunications Company, and was later rebranded to Zain in 2007. Zain has commercial presence in 25 countries across Africa and the Middle East, with an estimated work force of 13,000. Awesome news. Zain are huge in East Africa. Zain subscribers in East Africa have for a long time been able to roam when travelling throughout the region with exception of SA. I did note some time ago that I was able to receive and make calls when arriving back in SA from a trip abroad using a Zain sim... wonder if they were in the testing phase. These guys are definitely progressive... MTN failed to purchase them some years back...

Does this mean you could use a cell c sim card with your normal number in any country Zain is located and pay for a local call?
If i am in kuwait with a Cell C sim what will my local calls cost and making calls back to sa?

Good question... something tells me you are going to have a hard time finding the answer. Call me pessimistic.

lol read near the bottom of the article.

"In terms of the partnership, Cell C customers will in future receive similar benefits when roaming on these Zain networks."

right now you will still be billed normal INT rates

WOW this is excellent, big up Cell C!!

This is actually a slap on the face to MTN who has been trying to launch 'One World' (exactly the same service) for a while now. A small network like Cell C beat them to the punch, great job.

This is actually a huge step for South Africans, hoepfully with this we will see all networks reducing there ridiculous roaming rates.
