Garmin Live Traffic officially launched

Live traffic updates promise to calculate faster, better routes.

Garmin announced the launch of its Live Traffic information last month but it officially went live last week. The service is provided in co-operation with Altech Netstar Traffic (ANT).

A valid Live Traffic Subscription (12 months is included when you purchase one of the following Traffic Receivers, or when you purchase a bundled Garmin Traffic unit, such as the nĂĽvi 1300T)

I don't like the idea of subscriptions. I think it puts of potential customers. I'd rather pay a little more for a product that doesn't stop working after 12 or 24 months. Thats what I like about Nokia Maps - no subscriptions. It just keeps on working.

finally

TomTom had this for a while on most models (as far as I can ascertain from their website). Don't know about quality/popularity as it seems TomTom is popular in Europe and Garmin in Africa.

I don't see the point of this technology (other than the obvious nifty, techy angle). Most people that drive a given route know where the traffic is congested and don't need a device to tell them that. And people that are new to an area might be inconvenienced once with a traffic jam, but is that worth a subscription to avoid? I certainly wouldn't pay for it.

Does anyone know if you can use this on the Nuvi 205 or 215? I've noticed that in the UK you get some models and traffic receivers with 'n lifetime subscription.

Put on the radio. Traffic ****up reports every 15 minutes. For free...

What time do garmin switch this feature on?

Today was my first day with this thing and apparently there was zero traffic in Cape town this morning at 7 am.
