Since taking office, President Jacob Zuma's government has spent a total of R1,5-billion on luxury cars, five-star hotel accommodation, parties, tickets for sports events and "self-congratulatory" advertising, the DA said on Thursday.

"This kind of spending represents a gross misallocation of public funds," Democratic Alliance spokesperson Lindiwe Mazibuko told a parliamentary media briefing.

The R1,5-billion was R500-million more than the figure reported by her party in April this year, she said.

According to the DA's Wasteful Expenditure Monitor, released at the briefing, the national department to "waste" the most was public works.

"It spent approximately R99-million on upgrades to the residences of public officials when the Zuma administration came into office," the document stated.

The DA said the most wasteful provincial government, "by quite a large margin", was the African National Congress-run KwaZulu-Natal.

"It spent R120,5-million on a variety of items, including unnecessary rental space, luxury cars and artwork."

Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu was responsible for the biggest expenditure on cars since April, her department having spent about R7-million on four Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

The monitor says the total spent on new vehicles by Zuma's government was now R65,8-million.

The total spent on parties, conferences and similar events now totalled R209-million, including R300 000 spent on a party by the Tshwane Metro Council to celebrate executive mayor Gwen Ramokgopa's state of the city address and a gala dinner at the Pretoria city hall.

With that money they could have built more houses of better quality for the poor. Unfortunately the masses will see this as more DA propaganda and continue voting ANC.

Jip, its astounding how they can run a city so well and still do what an opposition party (more than one)is suppose to do.

So this is how the DA spends it time?

Dont they have a province to run?

Yes! Amazing isn't it? The DA runs the province well and is also a very effective Opposition Party! :)

Wait... what was your point exactly? You did have one, didn't you? :p

And we're supposed to believe that we're paying extra for electricity because of past mismanagement.
More like current and future mismanagement and luxuries.

I simply do not know how to bring this wastage point home to the supporters of the ANC.

So this is how the DA spends it time?

Dont they have a province to run?

I don't see how your argument holds any weight?

The DA tries to scrutinize the ANC because, and this may very well be a ground breaking revelation for you, they are an opposition party. It's sorta what the DA is meant to do, in order to put pressure on the ANC, and this means that they will start doing their jobs.

Yes, the DA also manage (seems unbelievable that they are able to accomplish so many jobs all at the same time!) to run the province, the very same province with the highest literacy rates (strange how the province with the highest literacy has opted for the DA and not the ANC... I guess reading the news paper lies to you, unlike the ANC rallies?)

I strongly suggest you put an end to your illogical ranting, I read a couple other posts of yours, and you're allegiance to the ANC is commendable, but very mislead. It's like having a child believe there's a bogey monster under the bed, and the only one with the magic stick to prevent it from eating you is the ANC.

Does not matter what anyone says, its like water off a ducks back, the ANC will do whatever they like, and the masses will let them do so. The DA do what they should do as the opposition.

R1.5 Billion?!

I knew the wastage was quite a substantial sum of money, but R1.5 Billion?

That's incredible - and where was it budgeted for? In other words, what suffered as a result of this? There are a lot of things that could've been done with that money...

I guess their only argument could be that they're trying a new inflation control method. LOL...:D

I would love to have been on the receiving end of that 1.5 billion.

Any ideas on getting my grubby hand on it?
