July 28, 29 - Southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Delta Aquarids can produce about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower usually peaks on July 28 & 29, but some meteors can also be seen from July 18 - August 18. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Aquarius. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight.

August 12, 13 - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak. This year's shower should peak on the night of August 12 and the morning of the 13th, but you may be able to see some meteors any time from July 23 - August 22. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. The thin, crescent moon will be out of the way early, setting the stage for a potentially spectacular show. For best viewing, look to the northeast after midnight.

October 20 - Comet Hartley 2 will make its closest approach to Earth, coming within 11.2 million miles. For a few days around October 20, the comet should be bright enough to view with the naked eye in the early morning sky. You will, however, need to be far away from the glow of city lights. Look to the east just before sunrise. In early November, NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft will observe comet Hartley 2 from a distance of about 600 miles.

October 21, 22 - Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionids is an average shower producing about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. This shower usually peaks on the 21st, but it is highly irregular. A good show could be experienced on any morning from October 20 - 24, and some meteors may be seen any time from October 17 - 25. Best viewing will be to the east after midnight.

November 17, 18 - Leonids Meteor Shower. The Leonids is one of the better meteor showers to observe, producing an average of 40 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower itself has a cyclic peak year every 33 years where hundreds of meteors can be seen each hour. The last of these occurred in 2001. The shower usually peaks on November 17 & 18, but you may see some meteors from November 13 - 20. Look for the shower radiating from the constellation Leo after midnight.

December 13, 14 - Geminids Meteor Shower. Considered by many to be the best meteor shower in the heavens, the Geminids are known for producing up to 60 multicolored meteors per hour at their peak. The peak of the shower this year should occur on the night of December 13 and morning of the 14th, although some meteors should be visible from December 6 - 19. Some estimates say there could be as many as 120 meteors an hour visible from dark-sky locations. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Gemini. The Moon will set early in the evening setting the sky up for a spectacular show. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight.

Anyone remember that Stargate 1 episode where those hick farmers, each year gathered to watch the beautiful lights in the sky, that kept on getting brighter and more each year.... Dr Phil Plait was correct, Death from the Skies!
 
Unfortunately we have a full moon at the moment, but some of the meteor showers will continue into August.

The figure ZHR is zenithal hourly rate. This is the number of meteors that a single observer would see per hour if the shower's "point of origin", or radiant, were at the zenith and the sky were dark enough for 6.5-magnitude stars to be visible to the naked eye. Illumination gives an idea of how dark the sky is, the lower the figure, the darker the sky.

The delta-Aquarids will appear from 12 July to 19th August peaking on July the 28th.
At 10 pm, face east, and look 4 hand spans and two finger widths above the horizon.
One finger width right is the 4th magnitude star delta d Aquarii.
The radiant is just above this star, see the map for more detail.
This meteor shower should be visible from 10.00pm until dawn,
with better meteor rates after midnight.
However, this year the full Moon's liht will signifcantly interfer with seeing any meteors.
The other meteor showers are weak.

Outside of the showers, you can still see sporadic meteors. Rates seen from the Southern Hemisphere are around 11 random meteors being seen per hour during the late morning hours and 2-4 per hour during the evening. The evening rates will be reduced slightly during the times around the full Moon due to interference by the Moons light.

They should be like shooting stars, although not hundreds. You should see around 20 (or whatever the ZHR is) within an hour period at the peak time. Best viewed after midnight and the meteors would appear to come from the relevant constellation.

Sometimes you can catch nice fireballs or Earth grazers with stunning trails.

This is one of those things you need lots of time, a comfortable chair and patience to enjoy.

Sit back in your chair, look at the area of the radiant and see what you can see. Kinda like fishing.

Some times you won't spot much. At other times you will be rewarded with one of those jaw-dropping WOW moments as a meteor streaks directly overhead leaving a glowing trail behind.

Those are the moments that make all the waiting worthwhile.

cool, just wanted to make sure i wasnt standing outside like a chop for nothing :p

so im in central jhb, i just look east?
 
This meteor shower would be a total wash due to the full moon being up and basically smack in the middle of the radiant. Only the very brightest meteors would be visible.

Will you stay awake to watch ?

You know it's a good night when a beautiful alignment of planets is the second best thing that's going to happen.

Thursday, August 12th, is such a night.

The show begins at sundown when Venus, Saturn, Mars and the crescent Moon pop out of the western twilight in tight conjunction. All four heavenly objects will fit within a circle about 10 degrees in diameter, beaming together through the dusky colors of sunset. No telescope is required to enjoy this naked-eye event: sky map.

The planets will hang together in the western sky until 10 pm or so. When they leave, following the sun below the horizon, you should stay, because that is when the Perseid meteor shower begins. From 10 pm until dawn, meteors will flit across the starry sky in a display that's even more exciting than a planetary get-together. - source

If the sky is cloudless, I will have periodic looks.
 
Best time would be around 03:00 on the morning of the 13th as Perseus would be just above the Northern horizon.
 
The alignment is looking good, clear sky in Cape Town, and I will be looking for the shower later.
