10 Mbps uncapped ADSL services: What is being planned?

I'll pay 1250 p/m if I am able to sustain throughput on a 10Mbps line... Otherwise whats the point I guess.
Mweb are already ripping R530 p/m for the 4Mbps service and it's ok-ish after hours.... question is will the additional R720.00 p/m really benefit me for faster downloads? Not so sure really.... so I will wait and see what others have to say thanks.

Lets hope it shakes up the market. With the recent launch of EASSy and Telkom's supposed IPC capacity increase, who knows, could be a game changer!

With even Mweb not able to commit what constitutes "abusive" use on shaped/Uncapped I cannot see what the high speed would benefit us. The local ISP's needs a huge wakeup call.

progression hindered by greed, waste of time if its only CEOs and Directors that can afford it,
R899 is not cheap for throttled shaped after hours only - which is also now throttled /shaped?
10mb/s should be 899 and 4mb/s - 499, and they know it.

Sigh. I really need to move openweb gold...

The isps could and should, release cheaper 6meg and 8meg offerings that people can run on their 10meg lines rather than shape the 10meg so badly that it's not usable. Cough*mweb*cough.

I predict plenty of anger, frustration, despair and outright fury that will hopefully lead to revolt !!!!

i would also gladly pay if they could guarantee the full speed at least 99% , but i doubt that will ever happen in my lifetime

I'm not even sure it will be worth it to upgrade to 10mbps line for me. Sure its fast, but no one knows exactly how much it will be throttled or shaped. and its highly likely that it will be. plus do i really need the extra speed when i already get everything i need in a quick enough time...not sure. Think i'd need more HDD's before that.

Consumers should not be fooled by companies that this speed is a luxury. It is long overdue and should be very cheaply priced. It will be a step in the wrong direction if this service does not come as a free upgrade to 1Mbps line holders. The upgrade should also trickle down to 512Kbps and below... It should be a round house kick to slow speeds at no extra cost to customers. Those of you willing and able to pay more for the 10Mbps service should not be so keen to declare so.

We are overpaying as it is for the services we have. To overpay even more without reigning in the cost of access even more than we have managed to do over the past half decade will be a sin.

The 10Mbps upgrades should be a zero cost upgrade to all and the lower tier services should be bumped up for free to the next tier as well... We deserve it! SOUTH AFRICA deserves it! And Telkom can do with the good publicity...

100% correct!!!

What has transpired from discussions with the ISPs is that users may have to fork out well above R1000 for a 10 Mbps uncapped ADSL account.

AfriHost carry pricing for 8192 kbps uncapped for R 997 p/m. Looks like there's more money to made by ISP's on faster line speeds :( and we the consumer appear to be the losers again.

+100

Total agreement!

I absolutely agree, except the ISP's will now be saying that they have to pay for more data from Telkom/Seacom for the faster line speeds. I really hope we won't be shafted yet again over this.

Afrihost is also still pondering whether an uncapped 10 Mbps service makes sense for them. “We are still deciding whether we are going to launch a 10 Mbps uncapped service and at what price,” said Afrihost CEO Gian Visser.

From Afrihihost website and past sucky experience : (this is where the throttling will kick in)
For a 384 kbps line if you move less than about 7 GBs a month it makes sense to stay on Capped.
For a 512 kbps line if you move less than about 11 GBs a month it makes sense to stay on Capped.
For a 4096 kbps line if you move less than about 17 GBs a month it makes sense to stay on Capped.

That's all very nice and all - 10 mbps line upgrades, but when will SA realisticly see this generally available to all? From the article and what Telkom has announced earlier this year, I get the feeling that only "those privileged lucky few" can look forward to this. Just another announcement confirming how far behind our fixed line telecoms is compared to the progress made in technology.

I'm betting Telkom will soon announce how they are on the "cutting edge" of technology with the imminent 10mbps upgrade...
