I think a correction needs to be made to indicate DESKTOP operating system. Because as far as SERVER operating systems go... Linux is on about 80% of global market share. And without servers, frankly, the Internet would not exist.

why dont we have any local linux mags?

i saw one in CNA, it was from the UK, with an 8.5GB disc with Ubuntu 10.04 and loads of updates but it was R140 :wtf:

We use Linux for all our mission-critical applications. Having the source code means that we are not held hostage by anyone's support department. :)

I think price has a lot to do with it.

Uh, no. Even in the server department Windows far exceeds the market shared claimed by Linux.

Let's think real world...do you really think Facebook & Twitter run on Windows servers? Do you think any of the millions of Google servers worldwide are powered by a Windows Server OS? IBM servers dont do Windows. The list goes on.

Oh, and MyBB runs on Debian Linux. :)

Honestly I do not care what others run on their servers, all I care is what we run on ours: 35 servers running Linux :)

In September 2008 Steve Ballmer (Microsoft CEO) claimed 60% of servers run Linux and 40% run Windows Server

Only 1% of the world's supercomputers run microsoft. 90% run Linux, 5% run Unix.

lol guy. i dunno where you get your stats... but hey... convincing dowz users of anything sensible is like trying to turn a muslim into a jew.

And linux cannot "CLAIM" anything because it doesnt BELONG to anyone.. whereas.. Microsnot can CLAIM wtf ever they want.... Server penetration stats is independently gathered anyway... so truth is truth....

and as an interesting fact... Google / Amazon / IBM together have more servers than the rest of the planet. And they ALL run a flavour Linux. So smoke that you Balmer bum boy.

Can you imagine the licencing fees if they decided to run Windows? :wtf:

There are thousands of Linux/Unix servers running in South African retail chains eg. furniture/clothing/chemists/petrol-garages alone.

One of our clients have over 550 sites, each with a Linux Server (and 3-5 Windows workstations) and about 30 large Linux servers at their head-office.

PS: Scary thing is how many smaller retailers are still running on DOS systems.

oh no....here we go *sprays windoze fan boy with bug sray*

I'm a Windows fan for stating an opinion? Guess I need to remove my Gentoo install then...

I never stated otherwise.

Agree because under Windows you need 5 different severs to do the job on one LINUX server.

Not true.

Honestly I do not care what others run on their servers, all I care is what we run on ours: 35 servers running Linux :)

We have 200+ server running Windows and another 100+ running Linux. Your point?

Only 1% of the world's supercomputers run microsoft. 90% run Linux, 5% run Unix.

I never stated otherwise. Supercomputers make up a tiny portion of the worlds server installations.

EDIT: Apologies, the difference between Linux and Windows market share is very little.
