South Africa's Apple iPod prices: How we compare

Bought my 64gb Touch in the states. I could have gotten a 32gb in SA for the same price. Yes I do understand that there are costs and taxes involved in getting the devices here but I still believe we are getting shafted.

I wonder what the cost of getting an iPod shipped from Hong Kong is.
 
Those American prices do not include sales tax. People always forget that American prices are advertised excluding tax.
 
Brazil has like a +- 60% import tax on electronics.
We are getting taken for a ride! Ive never bought any of my ipods in SA.

Even with taxes it's still going to be where it is on the list and still that much cheaper than SA. The resellers in this country are greedy and corrupt just like the government. Look at the prices for an iMAC, sure it will cost more to import these goods but still, the prices are WAY WAY too high, they all know it, some of us know it.
 
Take the 8gb nano for example. Add 14% vat and 25% duty and it's close to $215.

Also notice that a 7.29 exchange rate has been used. This rate has only been around for the past week or so. I think when apple made their pricing, it was closer to 7.8 to the usd.

So if we take usd215 and multiply by 7.8, we get R1677, which rounded off comes to R1699 (or perhaps the slight extra is to cover shipping costs to SA).

Btw, I don't work for Core, but I've tried bringing in ipods myself and unless u screw with customs (which is a really bad idea), then you'll realise the local price is not inflated at all.

You only pay 14% VAT on the total value of what you import. I'm not sure where you get the 25% duty from?

None of the electronics I've imported (ram/power supplies/hard drives) has ever cost me more than price of item + shipping

some states (e.g. New Hapshire) don't have sales tax. There are taxes applied when buying cross-states...but i don't know if Internet sales have the same provision.

Well, not sure where u get your numbers, but I bought an ipod 32GB in the middle east for exactly half price (our prices). You gotta add a LOT of taxes to justify doubling the price
 
So even New Zealand, that's at the ends of the world, is cheaper than us!

Read the article, the 25% duty is quoted there.
 
The only thing that is surprising is that we are not the most expensive.
Most of the reason that Apple products are more expensive here - not just iPods - is that we source from the UK.
If I could ship from the US, and even better; avoid shipping then I can save lots of rands.
For instance, the new iMac is R4000 more expensive here even after tax.

this does not bode well for my Mac Pro dream

Yes some states dont charge taxes like Oregon, cross-state you rarely pay taxes and on internet sales it seems to be only Apple that applies sales tax because Newegg does not charge me sales taxes nor other smaller places like monoprice. Amazon charges me sales tax because I am in the same state.
