  • No, GPU and CPU need to be separate

I have been an AMD user most of my pc using life, Some of my mates have even changed from intel to AMD, what gets me about intel is the size of that fan, its like a tree trunk, AMD simple , small and powerful. I really am looking forward to the new fusion processors.;)

OK....i have no idea what all that stuff in the article means...but it sounds cool....and the codenames for the APU/CPU/Core or wathcamacallit it EVEN COOLER! I want a laptop powered by a "bulldozer"!!!!!!! hehehehe.

I have had two machines powered by AMD...and never had a problem. :-)

Their investment in ATI (paid for by intel) has already paid off in their superior chipsets and integrated graphics. Fusion will be more than just putting a GPU core with a couple of CPU cores on a single chip since they are going to put the ALU of the traditional CPU core on its own. Sounds very optimized and I am sure that sometime in late 2011 intel will copy this.

I am also ditching Intel and switching to AMD. Will be getting the AMD Phenom II X6 Six-Core Processor from Evetech at the end of the month :)

Sounds very cool. :)

It seems that AMD is slowly but surely gaining ground against Intel again.

The Core 2 Duo did lots of damage to AMD. It was amazing bang for buck. We'll have to see what happens next. The Core i7 doesn't seem to be gaining lots of ground in my book.

Core i7 is brilliant... I have an i7 930 2.8gHz running 100% stable at 3.6gHz. Just need a bigger cooler and I can hit 4.0gHz comfortably... I also prefer having a CPU and GPU separate, at least aesthetically, but Fusion does sound pretty damn impressive!

Bigger fan => slower rotation => less wear and tear => less noise

I'm all for integrating the GPU into the CPU but I have a few concerns:

1. High end gaming is always going to need an external GPU because I doubt AMD are going to integrate a GPU that competes with the a top of the range external GPUs.
If they do integrate a very high performance GPU how are you going to get businesses to buy a R8000 CPU for a desktop PC for the secretary?

2. I don't want to pay for a GPU in the CPU if I'm buying an external GPU. If the price is negligible it's okay but I don't want to have to pay an extra R500+ for something that I'll have to disable in the BIOS.

3. If APUs start to kill off the external GPU market it will drive up GPU prices. I don't want to have to replace the CPU in order to upgrade the GPU.

Jan your articles are always very well written, thanks for keeping to such a high standard, it's great.

I think the idea is not to replace the GPU but rather complement it....if you do not have one....use ours...if you want you can add one...
They could also move all the floating point ops to the GPU.
Just image playing crysis with a R1000 Motherboard....bliss

Very intresting some powerfull laptop/netbooks should be able to come out that can play some games for a change.

Wonder if they will be making consoles with this chip.

So much for the whole AM3 Socket is future proof theory then...

Socket AM2+ lasted very long, and for those bleeding edge DDR3 junkies I think AM3 did not do too badly, but I won't go DDR3 just because its the latest and greatest. I can do a lot more with 8GB DDR2 and with 4GB DDR3 which is more expensive too.

Hey everyone, got some feedback from AMD South Africa this morning and updated the article with it...

"Jaco Laubscher, AMD South Africa’s channel sales manager for CPU, GPU and Chipset, says that AMD SA are expecting to go to market with the Ontario APUs in the first half of 2011."

DDR2 is about the same price than DDR3, been like that for a while.

When AM3 came out that was not the case - yet many people thought they would get AM3 because its newer. Then again, AM3 dis last longer than any intel platform but not as long as most AMD platforms should.
