Canon 60D announced and previewed.

It's too close to a 550D :/

I'd been waiting for this for a few months, but as soon as I read no alloy body, I figured it may be a little close to the 550D ...

EDIT : I see under specs it says PC terminal 'no' ... does this mean one couldn't tether a netbook to the lower cameras?

PC Terminal refers to the flash sync terminal that uses the PC type connector. Tethering the DSLR to a computer uses the USB port.

I guess my next upgrade will be to the 7D or its successor. I use the Joystick quite a bit for selecting AF focus points (and wish it was on the battery grip too). I'm not a fan of focus and recompose. :)

This looks *really* close to a 550D :/

For around R2,500.00 - R3,000.00 extra, I see little point in getting it ...

Apart from the AF system from the 50D, what else is different?

I'm not too fired up about this one either. Plastic shell, flip out screen, smaller body, no joystick, SD card? WTF Canon? This is like a 55D with a higher framerate and better AF.

Isn't that the point of the XXD range anyway?

The formerly blurred lines between the XD and XXD are much more distinctive now.

Me neither, especially when shooting wide apertures. Fortunately the better AF makes focus and recompose redundant.

I hope you're being facetious. The difference in build quality is one of the reasons I chose the xxD over the lesser models. I don't consider taking features away to be a step in the right direction.

That's exactly why I'm not impressed with the 5D's AF.

I've always considered the "build quality" argument to be a bit misleading. Just because it now shares the same consumer-grade construction of the XXXD doesn't mean it's fragile. That flip around screen is actually going to save a few heartaches since it affords better protection to the LCD.

As always if you want a solid, robust body you need to bypass everything below the 1D range, even the 5D/7D models.

I do like the joystick so have to wonder how swapping it for the new control dial is going to work out. It might make using it vertically with a grip a little easier to manage though.

Of course not but it doesn't mean the difference between that and the magnesium shell is insignificant either.

I'm sure the 7D was killing sales of the XXD. It's clear to me they wanted a range that fit in between the XXXD and the XXD, now they have one.

But now the lines between XXXD and XXD are blurred ;)

This is 60D looks almost identical to a 550D ... they probably could have announced it as a 600D or something? I'd hoped for an 11-point AF or those micro settings you photo folk always talk about.

How much better is this AF system than the 550D? Both are 9 point?

On the RRP site, they have the 550D with kit lens at $899.99

The 60D is $1,099.00 body only - a fair amount more for a small difference (IMO)

Of interest, the 50D is also listed at $1,099.00 body only ... so guessing the 60D will equal the 50D pricewise?

I guess you considered the difference between the 550D and the 50D to be just as small?

No ... It had a magnesium alloy body, which ups it my eyes ;)
