So my latency on MWEB skyrockets at night and I then bought some Afrihost and it was even worse and now I bought the super dooper OpenWeb UNSHAPED one and it it still absolutely crap...

What's going on and why is it at night?

It's so bloody frustrating.

Pooky.

Good luck!

The exchange I connect to is the same....after hours and weekends...crap latency no matter what ISP.....been like this for 18 months now.

And do you think you can get Telkom to acknowledge there's a fault or even get them to fix it ??? No *** ways....impossible....

I'm beginning to think that the problem is not with the exchange, but with SAIX (all dsl traffic routes through them no matter which ISP you use.)

Most likely the exchange. Probably over saturated. Which is why when everyone gets home from work it gets bad.

I reported a fault a while back when my speeds were terrible all the time and they even came to my house but when they came it was perfect. How do I get them to fix something that only happens at night?

It was still bad at 1 this morning.

There is nothing to fix pooks, they need to upgrade it.

I have basically stopped online gaming because my ping used to be 11-18 now it's 130+ and most nights averages 150+. I have logged fault after fault after fault but most telkom techies do not even know what latency is let alone how to fix it.

At night everyone is downloading like mad so the exchange gets over loaded and bam high latency. Since mweb launched uncapped the only time my ping has been decent is when seacom goes down and all the downloaders cannot download hahah

That's so annoying. I would LOVE to have 130-150 latency. Mine is usually 300 which is alright for League Of Legends...

Don't let me get started on this ISP. A big overweight dinosaur with a deformed tail. Seriously, my latency was sky high whilst I was with them. Moved to Axxess, and BANG, problem solved.

I also thought it was mweb but axxess accounts and SAIX gave me the same ping which ruled out mweb. It is not mweb in some cases, in most i would think.

I was about to find my other thread about my carp ping but I think this one will do.

I am in the same boat and am also going give up gaming because of my ping. Between 6pm and 11pm ping shoots up to 150ms + making first person shooters unplayable.

Started about a month or two ago and have since tried everything, nada :(

I'm sure you gentleman will appreciate the irony of hearing that I'm now in the same boat :) The ping bumps up to between 130-200ms on the 3rd hop, which makes it look suspiciously like our own network, but I get the same experience on a SAIX connection.

Our senior network engineer did some further investigation for me this evening and pointed out an over utilized edge service router in the Western Cape which is showing increased latency. The problem is that the ESR is essentially invisible in the tracert due to VRF so it's not a straight forward matter to establish which one you're routing through.

I'm going to do some further investigation regarding this tomorrow and I'll share what I can in terms of what we can expect with regards to the escalation of faults like this and Telkom's time lines on addressing them.

Yea i enjoyed playing BFCBC when it first came out when my ping was decent, then bam 150 average and all i ever did was bash the table because okes never dropped.

I have tried every account known to SA and the ping stays high :(. Telkom sucks is all i can say. Please will@mweb get telkom to fix it :(. It spikes as well which is horrid 105 140 180 200 type shyte is not cool.

ya I find that by the time I see guys it it too late, I get pooned before I even see them look at me.

EDIT: I just pinged myadsl.co.za now and got a average of 46ms, last night it was around 250ms :(

On a related thread (Clareinch, Cape Town), I posted tracert's yesterday afternoon indicating the issue as possibly being an ESR (I'm obvously not a network engineer). The 2nd and 3rd hops are different depending on which backbone the ESR is trying to conenct to:

My pings are down to 7ms(!) this morning, so its definitely congestion related...

@Gordon_R - I'm on Clareinch as well. Pings settled back down to normal levels at around 11pm last night. I'm doing some further investigation on this now, will keep you posted.

@killadoob Can you PM me your ADSL DN so that I can establish where you're being routed through. I really can't make any promises about getting these issues resolved at this point, the reality is there simply may not be any quick fixes.

However, I'd at very least like to start by putting some pins in the map and getting a picture of where they're occurring.

Had horrible latency last night with Mweb as well (~400-600), playing WoW. Changed it to go through their @mweb realm and popped a battleping, and all was sitting pretty at 230ms. My friends on Webafrica had endless problems last night, which sucks since Webafrica only had gaming going for them in the past.

@killadoob

LOL Sorry, ISP jargon - the phone number on your ADSL line :D

My ADSL line is beyond f u c k e d tonight. I can't even connect to skype.

Tried a game of BC2 and had a 999 ping.

cmd ping showed 80m avg, re ran 5 sec later and got 400ms avg.
