Anyone here got a 7.9 in Windows 7 and what is your hardware config?

Is 7.9 possible?
As of July 2010, few people own 7.9-ranked computers. There are only a handful listed on WEI Share, a website where people compare their index scores. But it’s a goal that will grow more attainable as more advanced computer components become the norm.

Microsoft program manager (and blogger) Scott Hanselman attempted to build a computer that was fast enough to reach the 7.9 limit. For his supercomputer (which he dubbed “GOM,” or God’s Own Machine), he set a $3,000 limit and bought a six-core processor, a GTX 285 graphics card, and a low-voltage desktop memory system with 12 gigabytes (GB) of RAM.

Almost perfect

Yet he still only reached 7.8. "Getting to 7.9 is possible, but man, it’s not easy," Hanselman said. "For now, until off-the-shelf things get faster, you’ll need some experience in overclocking, possibly a RAID disk array, and a lot of patience. Truly, if you get over 7.7, you’ve got one of the fastest machines out there.”

Very interesting...I never knew 7.9 was the top end.

So by rights a score of 5.0 isn't 50%, but rather 63.3% ... in realistic terms.

I enjoy how it doesn't use the aggregate of your scores to form your overall score, but rather highlights your weakest link in the chain and places emphasis on it instead of allowing better components to compensate for it.

Windows Vista had a top score of 5.9, but it has moved to 7.9 in Windows 7. And it will go higher when better hardware gets released.

I got 4.9, which is not too shabby for onboard graphics.

Ah! I missed the last info at the bottom of the page....

What hardware do you need to reach 7.9?

Components may vary by manufacturer, and having specific hardware may not guarantee a 7.9. But people who have built high-scoring PCs generally have bought the following pieces:

•A quad-core desktop processor with at least 4 gigahertz (GHz) (with a water cooling kit for overclocking) or a six-core processor

•A socket 1366 motherboard

•A low-voltage desktop memory system with 12 GB of RAM

•A GTX 285 graphics card

•A 256 GB internal solid-state drive in a striped RAID 0 configuration

•A 1000-watt power supply

all my scores are all over 7.7 with the exception of my HDD which is a shoddy 5.9 ... Hmm need 2 ssd in raid :D
/call for sponsors!?

I get 5.9 with my rig:

Intel Core2Duo E8500 at 3.16
Kingston 3GB DDR2 800 Dual Channel
XFX ATI HD4850 512MB
Seagate Sv35 500GB 16mb cache SATA 2

:o

All my scores are over 7.4.. except my damn HDD.... hmmmm

Might have to have a look at that actually.

:o

Change your ram to DDR2 - 1066 and overclock that. Mine is now at 7.1

Nah... the servers have RAID... (NOT SSD though)

I might get a plain and simple SSD for my personal machine, since I don't need boatloads of space on the machine itself....

I would like to know how much of a change would happen when changing from a dual core to a quad core to a six core cpu.

overclock your cpu to 4.2 and your ram to 870mhz by raising your fsb and both will be 7.1 respectively. mine config is exactly the same with a cm hyper 212 cooler, the hdd is the weakest link.

E6600 @ 3.2GHz
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4
Kingston 2x2GB DDR2-800
(Temporary) 8600GTS 256MB (My GTS250 = artifacting)
Seagate 500GB+250GB 7200.10

CPU: 6.5
Memory: 5.5 (>_<)
Graphics: 6.5
Gaming Graphics: 6.5 (lolwut )
Primary HDD: 5.9

The WEI really isn't much to go by, last year someone on the NAG forums posted their score with an i7, GTX280, 8GB ram. My GTS250 beat his GTX280.

Here is something interesting to note.
I bought my Phenomx4 955 and it achieved a CPU score of 7.4

My multimedia pc with a ATHLONX4 635 also achieved a 7.4wep rating(this was before i cheated my ratings):D

What I think WEI does is generate scores in comparison to the other parts in your system. So demon angel your Athlon is probably way better than the rest of that PC's components. With my GTS250 I think I got like 5.9 on my CPU or something like that.

CPU - Core i5 750 (stock): 7.3
RAM - 4GB G.Skill running 1333mhz 6-6-5-12: 7.5
Grahpics 3d/2d: Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 Ultimate, 1gb memory and passively cooled: 7.0
Hard-drive - Western Digital Green Power 750gb: 5.9

The scores aren't based on speed alone, for example, my memory score stays the same regardless of timing. And a Core i5 750 is faster than an Athlon x4 635 and Phenom x4 995 IIRC and yet it scores lower. Not too important that rating tbh.

CPU - Core i7 920 (stock): 7.6
RAM - 6GB kingston running 1333mhz: 7.6
Grahpics 3d/2d: Sapphire Radeon 4890: 7.6
Hard-drive - 1tb Samsung: 5.9

so ya :/ i know you only get above 5.9 for HDD if its raid, raptor or SSD.
