Soon Europe's 3rd favorite car maker Opel will be selling its 3rd place 2010 European Car of the Year contender - the 8th generation Astra - in SA.

Prices are very attractive and as can be expected from Opel the standard equipment level is very high, as opposed to their main German rival. The Astra has not only done well in the European car of the Year awards, it has also received numours positive reviews, including one by the British motoring magazine What Car? who claimed that the Astra is "Certainly more stylish than the likes of the Focus or Golf".

With the facelift Golf 6 around the corner it remains to be seen how big an impact this car will make in South Africa. Styling draw strongly from the Insignia (2009 European car of the Year) so perhaps this model will win some new customers for Opel.

Mode line up and costs are :
OPEL ASTRA 1.6 ESSENTIA 5DR : R 218,000.00
OPEL ASTRA 1.4T ENJOY 5DR : R 236,900.00
OPEL ASTRA 1.4T ENJOY PLUS 5DR : R 263,400.00
OPEL ASTRA 1.6T SPORT 5DR : R 280,300.00

How can any rational person get excited over an Opel? I don't get it.

You do realize Opel has got a lot going for it and it would not be 3rd overall in the European car of the year awards had it not been for people getting excited of it. As a brand it has a long tradition of making sporty and fun to drive cars and it is the oldest company in Germany that makes cars.

I do realized though that in South Africa some people have a negative view of the brand - not sure why that is but its obvious that its just us because the brand is pretty strong elsewhere.

Meh I'd rather buy the new polo.. Looks more refined and elegant even with sporty front and better pricing and it's car of the year.. why take 3rd when you can get 1st for less :p

True - the new Polo did come first. Although its looks are no where near this car, not even the Golf comes close (and its not just me saying so). The polo won because it is a sensible deal - especially the bluemontion versions which we will hopefully get in SA soon. Still, there is a certain mediocre and sombre image that comes with the Polo and some people need a car that is a little more individual and looks more sporty.

Because they are kuk cars.

Last three I bought were pretty good, still have two of them. What happened to yours?

I have a Astra and friends who drove with me said, "this car is good".
I drive a certain road everyday, once drove it in a Corolla, nearly rolled it. Then drove it again in the Opel and feel in control again.

Friend of mine is a fleet owner, he bought himself a astra after he saw how good they perform.

Must say, the only problem I had with the opel was the service centre's.

Fortunately I have never owned one. But my folks owned one, 3 mates had them. They all had some form of schit with them and then there was the service from Delta/GM, fortunately they learnt their lessons. They also don't last, after 120k they seem to want to disintegrate if I could put it that way :D The three mechs I know also reckon they are schit cars and they work on cars every day. I have driven a few in my life as well. You must be a die hard fan to buy them, rather you than me :D

You sound look those infomercials that over exaggerate about competitors products. Maybe it's your driving and not the car because that statement just seems so lame.

I have to agree with Roux(something i hate doing) i dont understand why there would be anything negative what so ever about this car.

The Astra's competition: Golf, Focus, Mazda 3, Kia Cerato, Hyundai i30, Chev Cruze, Toyota Corrolla
I'd have the Astra above the boring already aging(in looks) & expensive Golf above the koreans and above the wake me up i'm stuck in the 80's Corrolla. Two i find most exciting of the bunch is the sharply styled Mazda 3 and the elegant but sporty Astra

Those prices are also very very good Cerato or Cruze money. On the german side i've found Opel's services & maintenance are cheaper than VW
mmmm whats wrong with the Opel? Except the fact that GM acts a little crazy for example changing the Corsa bakkie to a Chev? wtf? but anyway cant blame Opel for that.

I have also heard of people having pretty bad deals with their Opels. From the bad stories its about 50/50 between bad maintenance and just a bad car. I'm not saying every Opel is perfect, far from it, they are not Mercedes nor BMW but if you take a look around you will realize its the same with other brands to. I guess there are just as many dodgy VWs out there. But from personal experience I can say that if you look after these cars, doesn't matter if you hammer sometimes, they should be a very rewarding ride to have.

They can last a lot further than 120,000km - this one is now close to 180,000km :

Thanks - not often that happens. Although most of the time I'm trollin' so I guess thats why :p

It's an in between step. Soon it will be replaced with a Chev based model and sold under the same name as the Corsa Bakkie has been sold in South America since the 90's :

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH HELL NOOO thats a Aveo!!! If it is i'll be a sad freakin panda! It better be a new corsa and not a Aveo but i think it is :(

:D I have to agree on that - not the best in GM styling on that bakkie. Best to keep it European.

The Montana's chassis should be based on the Corsa D but the styling will be much closer to the Korean Chevs we seen these days.
