Taking the points given to manufacturers that had cars in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place since 1964 reveals some pretty interesting results. Well done FIAT :o

Well, judging by the fact that out of the top 10 makers 8 of them are European I'd say no - they are not big on the Koreans.
Then again, if you have the options they have on models you'd be crazy to buy imports.
 
Well I guess, so much for Hyundai & Kia's more "European" appeal.

Agree, with our limited selection and smaller buying power the cars that make sense here are a whole lot different to there.

these stats are over a long time period...i think the korean models have only recently gained appeal
 
Anyone willing to lay money on the fact that Roux would NOT have posted this if Opel was below VW?? ;)
 
No one bets on the impossible. Pffft! Opel below VW - you make me LOL :D

Not even if the new Astra (more stylish than the new Golf or Focus) did not come in 3rd this year with 221 points to the first place Polo with 347, would Opel have been below VW.
I guess some have perceived quality and others have quality that stood the test of time :cool:

What is sad is that can spot at least 5 makers that are now defunct. The test of time is a harsh and cruel mistress indeed.
 
It makes sense that they are top - Italy is car crazy and Fiat makes very European cars in the sense that they are small, durable and affordable. I'm glad they are tops.
 
The Test of Time is indeed cruel and heartless if you are unlucky enough to own an Opel with more than 50 000 k on the clock...

This was back in 2008 - its close to 180,000km now :

To be fair our Microbus took 18 years, 2 gearboxes and 3 engine overhauls to get to 235,000km. But I still love that VAG VAN.
 
I have no doubt that an Opel engine can get to relatively high miles, but it's a bit of a bugger when the engine keeps running and the body falls apart around your ears.....
 
OK, I'll agree to some extent. Let me be honest with regards to my Astra G : The driver seat needed fixing once because I lowered it onto something and it went a wobbly - probably shouldn't have. The demister vent in the front has had a rattle since forever if you put it back normally, but I know a trick with mirror tape that keeps it quite (and you can't see the tape). The default black center console scratches too easily especially around aircon controls and the radio. The backlights in the center console also died. The fake leather around the gear knob and hand brake becomes horrible at 100,000km. Luckily I got genuine leather replacements for cheap from an eBay Vauxhall store and a new center console (silver not black) cost me 50 GBP with shipping. For the last 6 years the car stayed outside in the sun and it will cost me R700 to replace the sagging roof lining.

So yeah, their cosmetics become dodgy, ever been inside a Monza ;) ? But its cheap to fix.

indeed, every one i have had, the engine has been bullet proof, the interior has fallen apart rapidly...
The rattles alone were enough to drive me borderline insane...

pffft, my Polo 1.4, 2003 year has done 170000km's now, and I got it to go 200km/h on the highway (the engine was literally redlining though...)...

Stuff knows how I got it there though, the car is only rated to go 170km/h :confused:.

They've got a weird bias towards smaller cars though. Look at the last 10 winners:

Aside from the Insignia all of them are smallish cars.

Same for Fiat's 9 wins - all of them small cars. In fact that goes for pretty much all the wins. They only really big & expensive car is the one Merc win (S class) and the Porsche...both of the wins 30+ years ago. I wonder what causes the journalists to vote so strongly in favour of one segment of the industry...
 
Well done to Nissan, Alfa and Opel for their 2011 Euro COTY awards! Especially Nissan that moved up to 14th position with its 1st place Leaf.
