ISSUE SOLVED - SEE POST http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ution-anyone?p=5029449&viewfull=1#post5029449

PLEASE READ POST #10 FOR THE LATEST SUMMARY OF THE ISSUE

Hi there,

We are using the new 2GB package with a Huawei E1752 modem.

First we came across the following problem:

While most of the Internet and email works perfectly fine, certain websites just never load (e.g. http://fabrikar.com/). We are using the modem in a location where we are roaming on the Vodacom network. The strange thing is that this problem only arises when we have the Cell C SIM card in the modem. When we have a Vodacom SIM card inserted (it also works in your modem), then the websites load without problem. Meanwhile they are using the same Vodacom network/tower. This is certainly very confusing.

We first found the following partial solution:

It seems it is necessary to set the computer up to use the Cell C proxy server (196.31.116.250 on port 8080) e.g. in Windows Vista: Control Panel->Internet Options->Connections. Select Cell C and press the settings button. Tick both check boxes and enter the proxy information.

NOW, some website, even http://mybroadband.co.za/news/ and Google search results load mostly, but never finish loading. We checked what exactly happens using Firebug and it seems all the associated files load completely, but the actual html never finishes. You can e.g. load a page that is supposed to have 50 table rows, but only 45 load and then there is a grey box. With a Vodacom SIM it loads completely. Looks to us like there is some sort of wrong set-up on their servers. At some point we even got a proxy server error:

Code:
CacheHost: CellCwapgw-esher-1
ErrPage: ERR_CONNECT_FAIL
Err: (113) No route to host
TimeStamp: Mon, 11 Oct 2010 12:48:06 GMT

ClientIP: 197.171.4.65
ServerIP: 209.85.227.99

HTTP Request:
GET /search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=g2c&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=page+never+loads+completely&btnG=Search HTTP/1.1
Host: www.google.co.za
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100914 Firefox/3.6.10 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0C)
Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8
Accept-Language: en-za,en-gb;q=0.8,en-us;q=0.7,en;q=0.5,de-de;q=0.3,af;q=0.2
Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate
Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7
Keep-Alive: 115
Proxy-Connection: keep-alive
This was at least fixed after disconnecting and reconnecting.

Anyone any ideas? This unfortunately makes things a bit unreliable and tedious. If it can't be fixed we would have to go back to Vodacom.

I can access both of those with a Cell C E1820 modem, but I have full HSPA+ - this is in Joburg.

Hi there,

We've checked the jojotanks site and we also cannot load it at all without the proxy settings. If we use the proxy you can see it, but it never finishes loading. The interesting thing here is that here it seems to be the counter that is the culprit (http://counter.goingup.com/track/heatmap/clickheat.js?st=bzqrgkz) that never loads. On the mybroadband news page it is the main document again. We were trying to load the whois info (at http://www.coza.net.za/whois.shtml), same problem. Using Vodacom, instead, we could establish that the server of mybroadband is the same Hetzner server as the one we use (which is hosted overseas), is it maybe always websites hosted overseas (whether .za or not) that have this problem?

Jola: Are you roaming on Vodacom or on the Cell C network?

Maybe it is the set-up of the link between the Vodacom and the Cell C network. That could obviously be on either side.

Hello sean12,

Thanks for the suggestion. We've tried it with the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera. Same problem everywhere. It would have been to nice to have such a simple solution :)

Hi there,

We are just at the Cell C shop and we can also confirm that there is no problem using HSDPA. We also tried the Cell C EDGE Network and first it did *not* work, but later it did consistently. Might have been a short blip. This obviously makes the problem even more difficult to track, but the problem is consistent when using EDGE roaming in Vodacom territory.

We have now sent the following email to the Cell C Customer Service. It contains the latest summary of the problem.

It seems the situation is a bit more complicated than we originally thought and seems we are not the only ones having it as you can see here. Using the proxy server seems to create other problems. So we will now try to discuss both issues trying to separate them as good as possible.

Description of the issue common to both set-ups:

We are using the new 2GB package with a Huawei E1752 modem. Everything works fine on HSDPA.

The problem is when roaming in the Vodacom EDGE network. While most of the Internet and email works perfectly fine, certain websites just never load (e.g. http://www.jojotanks.co.za, http://fabrikar.com/ and http://mybroadband.co.za/news/). The strange thing is that this problem only arises when we have the Cell C SIM card in the modem. When we have a Vodacom SIM card inserted (it also works in your modem), then the websites load without problem. Meanwhile they are using the same Vodacom network/tower. This is certainly very confusing.

We first found the following partial solution: using the proxy server

The situation somewhat improved, when setting the computer up to use the Cell C proxy server (196.31.116.250 on port 8080) e.g. in the Windows Vista Internet Options. Then the websites loaded mostly, but never finished loading. This sometimes even affects Google search results! We eventually figured out that this was probably caused by the proxy server, since it compresses all websites using gzip, which probably sometimes creates other issues (e.g. most likely with compressed javascript).

Further investigations

We checked what exactly happened using Firebug on some websites and it seems all the associated files load completely, but the actual html never finished. This was true for all the above websites as well as in the backend of our own website hosted with Hetzner overseas: e.g. you can load a page that is supposed to have 50 table rows, but only 45 load and then there is a grey box. With http://www.jojotanks.co.za is is actually a counter from http://counter.goingup.com which is the offending url, which keeps this page from ever finishing. With a Vodacom SIM all pages load completely. We could establish that the http://mybroadband.co.za/news/ is hosted on the same Hetzner server as our own, which is also overseas. It seems all above sites are hosted overseas. This would point to to the connection to overseas sites. But that does not mean that all overseas content is a problem: Yahoo, Aol and Amazon, for example, load without a problem.

We visited the Cell C shop on Tuesday and when we were first using the Cell C EDGE network (in opposition to Vodacom roaming) the pages first did not load, but we managed to load all these pages without problem on the Cell C HSDPA network. After this the pages did even load on the Cell C EDGE network. Maybe once a page has been loaded into the Cell C network it is cached somewhere and the problem disappears for a while.

Without proxy

Yesterday, we investigated further and found the problem was not solved at home (roaming on the Vodacom network) while using the proxy server. But when switching the proxy off all these pages seemed to work fine. As mentioned above it seems the proxy server was creating its own problem, probably due to the compression. So this is not really a recommended solution, unless Cell C can fix that side of things and we stopped using it, since everything was working well without it.

Today the problem is back: http://www.jojotanks.co.za, http://fabrikar.com/ and even http://www.iol.co.za/ never finish loading. Iol.co.za is even hosted locally, but it seems the Google ad code, which tries to load content from overseas is possibly the problem. http://mybroadband.co.za/news/ is working fine.

So the problem is still there and should probably primarily be sorted out apart from the proxy server solution attempt.

PS: We found this issue primarily using Firefox, but the issue occurs in the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Opera as well. We also tried switching off javascript and running the browser in safe mode (i.e. without plugins etc), but the problem remains. It is definitely some issue on your network.

Please help!

I am also roaming on vodacom - Hving the same problems. The Jojo tanks home page appears not to load. When I hit CTRL-U, the complete source of the page is displayed including closing </html>

The JOJO tanks page has google analytics code in there. I suspect google analytics is stalling the page from loading. If this is the problem it might be sorted if we put the analytics server into the hosts file to block it.

I am also browsing cell c site and although the pages are displayed, they never finish loading status=transferring data from www.cellc.co.za After examining the code, Cell C also has google analytics code in there.

edit: adding these to hosts file fixed browsing on some of these sites:
Code:
127.0.0.1 google-analytics.com
127.0.0.1 counter.goingup.com
127.0.0.1 googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de
127.0.0.1 alternate-ad-url.com
127.0.0.1 ads.ookla.com
127.0.0.1 adverts.privatelabel.co.za
127.0.0.1 imrworldwide.com
127.0.0.1 getclicky.com

I think that it will not fix every page, you will have to troubleshoot everytime it happens. Not ideal.

Hi there,

We've just come across some more websites that don't work: http://www.ernst-dreyfuss.eu/ and http://www.drugs.com/international/ranfen.html. In the first case its own javascript and css never finishes loading (according to Firebug).

Murray654: This is very helpful, since these are very common ones to cause the issue. Now we have certainly learnt something. The hosts file was new to us.

HideInLight: We can confirm that on Vodacom roaming this download never starts, but we also get "waiting for ad.yieldmanager.com". Maybe you can try the hosts file solution of Muray654.

NEW ISSUE: We cannot retrieve file lists from our server with FTP (using FileZilla) and we don't manage to upload a file to our server using SFTP (with WinSCP). This is now becoming irritating. (Our server is on international hosting with Hetzner South Africa.

Hoping for a solution from Cell C soon...

The ernest dreyfuss site and drugs.com load fine for me. I just loaded the AdBlock Plus plugin for firefox, and so far its looking promising.

Soon I will be doing some web design work for someone, so I thought I would check this out. I found the same problem, but thought I found a solution by changing from passive FTP to active FTP. However I still get the problem. However if I try again, the 2nd time the file list loads. And I found another site that doesn't load forum.filezilla-project.org which is a pity, the answer might be hidden in there somewhere.

Hi there :)

murray654: Adblock Plus does help for www.iol.co.za and drugs.com, but not for www.ernst-dreyfuss.co.za on our machine.

We've tried to run tracert to see if there is anything there that might give insight. First on Cell C:

Trace complete.

What can we see from this? All we can see with our untrained eyes is that the first hop on Cell C seems to always time out. It also doesn't look as if the request goes first part way through the Vodacom network. It seems to be immediately in the Cell C network. Lastly, the journey to google analytics seems to be nearly twice as long on Cell C than at Vodacom.

We'll try to contact the the Cell_C member of this forum. Maybe he or her can also have a look at this.

Hi murray654,

We've looked at the Filezilla forum using vodacom and we could unfortunately find no hidden answer there, either.

Best wishes

Will try adding that to hosts file.
A temp solution for now is to use proxies to browse the internet:
http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html
Just be careful not to enter any confidential information whilst using the proxies, just use it to browse sites that cannot load where you just need info.

Hi everyone,

After a long time had passed we have checked all the sites, FTP and SFTP, yesterday, and it seems Cell C has quietly fixed the issue in the meantime. We don't know when exactly, but are certainly very glad :)

Thanks to everyone involved and for the excellent suggestions.
