Samsung Galaxy S Android FroYo upgrade on the way

How is it that Samsung can get the update to customers via their service centres but Leaf can not? (Wasn't their excuse that they aren't allowed to do it like that? Uh-huh....) On top of that, Samsung can do it via Kies but HTC can't do it via their PC Suite? Good for Samsung. HTC/Leaf, your move.

Been running the first "official" Froyo (JPM) on the SGS for a while, some improvement over 2.1 but it still has some issues. GPS works perfectly now (at least on my phone, some users are not seeing any improvements) but the lag is still there or has gotten worse unless you apply a lag fix...

There are some nice new features though

People have been complaining about GPS problems but i have had none on my galaxy s 2.1

I also haven't had GPS problems with my galaxy S on 2.1

I do however have lag when messaging, weird as it isn't even that much processing.

I'll upgrade via the KIES "registry fix" as soon as its available internationally... Missed out on the previous one by a day. ARGH!

"Before the end of the year"... pathetic.
That's one of the few things I miss about my iPhone, at least you knew exactly when you would get the next upgrade.

TBH, I don't even know what problems the guys are experiencing. :o

The problems i had with the old firmware was that if i was driving and turned on GPS it would take at least 10 minutes to lock on and when it did it would often think i am on a road running next to the freeway and so on.

But after getting rid of the stock firmware everything has been just dandy :)

If you're going to use a hack to download it you may as well get a custom lagfixed firmware from xda-developers.com. You're voiding your warranty anyway.

I've had Froyo on mine for ages now...

I am quite disappointed it will be out end of the year, when HTC Desire owners here in SA got theirs a few months back.

Informal estimate is mid-november

I spoke with a Samsung technical support person today, bringing up the frustration at the whole deal. Froyo is apparently in their "testing center" and he estimates (though he was quite clear that he couldn't be specific) that it should be available mid-November. Which, whilst it still blows from the POV that Froyo has been out for longer and other countries with the same model (Europe & Australia) already have the release, at least it's only 2 weeks (or so) away.
I've considered using another ROM but haven't because:
1) I optimistically keep on expecting the update to come Any Day Now
2) I actually like the samsung additions (the notification pull-down with wifi, bluetooth, etc toggles -- that's not on my friend's HTC Desire running Froyo) -- and Samsung at least has a free exchange-capable email client (which I have to use for work); even if it's not super-powerful (can't move mails around), it's at least functional (send & receive)
3) I don't want to take the chance on a bad ROM just yet. When Samsung decides they no longer want to support updates because of a marketing strategy to make me buy a new one, I'll be all over stock Android installs (or Cyano). But for now, I choose the path of least resistence.
All of this despite the fact that I really want the touted speed and functionality improvements of Froyo. I'm trying to play the patience game here (:

From this thread I see the HTC desire was upgraded. Does anyone know if the HTS Wildfire is getting a Froyo upgrade?

Haha! Already "voided" my warranty by rooting and installing a lagfix - I've just been hoping for that promised release and kept holding out since it was first announced. That said, me and a colleague are planning on flashing a custom firmware tomorrow afternoon... Choices, choices...

At least have a look at the one I posted. You can always get the files from me, then you don't have to download 176mb. ;)
